Sony is rolling out a PlayStation 5 system update that allows DualSense controllers to remember up to four paired devices. This quality-of-life improvement was previously teased, and it looks like the PlayStation 5 is finally making it a reality, though there’s a small catch.
Back in June, Sony announced an update for the DualSense controllers that would make pairing with multiple devices easier. As the company previously explained, the philosophy behind DualSense is to give players a seamless gaming experience across different platforms, and this update is being implemented to support that very idea.

Now, a new post on the official PlayStation Blog has announced that the highly anticipated PS5 update for DualSense controllers will begin rolling out on July 24. With this patch, users can assign up to four paired devices to each controller, using its four action buttons: Cross, Circle, Triangle, and Square. This essentially removes the need to re-pair the controller every time the user switches between platforms. However, the catch is that the update will first go through a preview phase, meaning it will initially be available to a select group of players in beta. If everything goes smoothly and the test results are promising, the update will roll out globally like any other PS5 system patch.
How DualSense’s New Multi-Pairing Feature Works
- The user pairs the controller to each device using one of the four action buttons (Cross, Triangle, Circle, Square).
- The DualSense and DualSense Edge remember the paired device.
- The next time the user wants to switch platforms, they turn the controller on by holding the PS button and the assigned action button. For example, “the PS button + Circle” to connect to the PC and “the PS button + Triangle” to connect to the iPhone.
Based on the official description, it seems the new DualSense feature will work with Windows PCs, Macs, mobile devices, and all other supported platforms. One thing to note is that the user’s main PlayStation console, either the PS5 or PS5 Pro, will take up one of the four memory slots on the controller. So, a more accurate way to put it is that users can add three additional paired devices besides their primary platform.
Connecting and pairing a DualSense controller with other devices isn’t a complicated process, but it can become a tedious and time-consuming task over time, especially for multi-platform gamers. Sony’s move to make this process a bit easier and more seamless seems like a step in the right direction. It remains to be seen how the community responds to the change and when it will roll out globally.
