Despair is the trickiest affliction to handle because of its “instant death” effect. You have to deal with this malady in certain areas, such as the mining tunnel past the Snowy Passage, the caverns in the Avian Marsh, and the pavilions in Zhenwu Temple.
Despair causes and effects
The Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Despair affliction is often caused by the following:
- Crimson Veins – Pink crystal ores with an eerie glow.
- Lantern-wielding Monks – These enemies carry a lantern that emits the same eerie glow. Thankfully, they’re fairly easy to stagger and kill… if you can reach them in time.
- Other enemies – Other corrupted enemies, such as Decayed Dogs and Summoned Skeletons, may cause Despair, too.
The biggest problem with the Despair affliction is the rapid buildup. For instance, if you’re going up against two Lantern-wielding Monks, Despair can build up in just a few seconds, leading to instant death. You need to cleanse the debuff quickly, even while you’re in the middle of attacking your opponent.

Best armors for Despair resistance
Among all the armors in the game–not counting those from the Deluxe Edition or preorders–we feel that the Palace Maid armor set offers the best defense against the Despair status. If you wear all four pieces, you should have 238 Despair resistance, which slows down the buildup significantly.
Even better, the Palace Maid set drops from the first boss in Tang Palace, which you visit a few hours into the campaign. You should definitely have it in your inventory by the time you head to areas populated by Despair-causing enemies.
Items that can cure Despair
There are also a few items that can help cure Despair in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
- Fixed Origin Pill – Boosts all status effect resistances temporarily.
- Mind Lotus Seed – Alleviates Despair buildup.
Aside from finding these items in the environment, you may also purchase these from Wu Gang or the Shrine’s Invoke menu. Have these ready whenever you encounter objects or hostiles that cause the affliction so you can prevent your character from perishing unexpectedly.
