    The Gathering’s Spider-Man 2099 Cards Create a Self-Sustained Combo

Magic: The Gathering’s next Universes Beyond set is going across the Spider-Verse with the Spider-Man-themed sets. Fans of the character won’t want to miss out on the upcoming Magic: The Gathering Spider-Man boosters and bundles to craft the perfect deck based on the popular Marvel hero.

Peter Parker’s Spider-Man isn’t the only variant of the character to appear in this set, though, giving players the choice to use many versions of Spider-Man in Magic: The Gathering. Among these is Spider-Man 2099, an iteration of the character from the future. With the other Spider-Man 2099 cards in Magic: The Gathering, players can have access to a strong combo.

Magic: The Gathering’s new Commander decks for Edge of Eternities are making two cards much harder to get due to a massive price increase.

    MTG’s Spider-Man 2099 Cards Work Well Together

Spider-Man 2099 Is an Interesting Card

The upcoming Spider-Man Universes Beyond collaboration with Magic: The Gathering is separated into two sets. The first is the Marvel’s Spider-Man set, which can be used in all Magic: The Gathering formats. The other set is the Marvel’s Spider-Man Eternal set, and as can be implied by the name, these cards are only legal in Eternal formats like Legacy and Commander. Depending on a player’s preferred format, they can mix and match cards from both of these sets to fit their playstyle.

One of the recently revealed cards from the Spider-Man set is Spider-Man 2099. Fitting with the character’s time-traveling theme, one of his effects is From the Future, preventing players from casting the card during their first three turns. However, players may be able to play Spider-Man 2099 on their opponent’s turn by using cards like Emergence Zone or Leyline of Anticipation to cast the card as though it had flash.

Lyla Is Crucial to the Spider-Man 2099 Combo

Though Spider-Man 2099 is from the Spider-Man set, its effects synergize well with some Spider-Man Eternal cards related to the character. Players wanting to stick with the Spider-Man 2099 theme will want to use Lyla, Holographic Assistant. As a character, she is Miguel’s AI companion, and in Magic: The Gathering, she perfectly accompanies the Spider-Man 2099 card.

One of Spider-Man 2099’s most powerful effects allows players to deal damage to a target equal to his power at the end of their end step, as long as a land has been played or a spell has been cast from anywhere other than the player’s hand during this turn. Players are incentivized to pump this MTG Spider-Man card’s power to significantly damage opponents, and Lyla presents a great way to do this.

Lyla, Holographic Assistant’s effect puts +1/+1 counters on a target creature whenever the player draws a card. In a deck built around drawing cards, this could give Spider-Man 2099 a lot of power early into the game. To keep the Magic: The Gathering Marvel crossover theme, the Spider-Man Eternal set also offers the Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara card. Not to be confused with the Spider-Man 2099 card from the standard set, this card has an effect that lets the player draw a card if a creature deals combat damage to another player, which could trigger Lyla’s effect, giving Spider-Man 2099 another counter.

These aren’t the only cards related to Spider-Man 2099 that work well together, either. Future Flight, another card from the Spider-Man Eternal set, lets the player draw two cards as it enters, and add a +2/+0 counter to the creature it enchants. Once again, this triggers Lyla’s effect, as well as giving Spider-Man 2099 even more power. Players wanting to stick to a Spider-Man 2099 aesthetic in their deck can get a lot of use out of this combo.

Why Some Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities Cards Are Surging In Value Ahead of the Set’s Launch

Pre-orders of singles for Magic: The Gathering’s Edge of Eternities have begun, and several noteworthy cards are highly valued for their utility.

Other Cards Can Synergize With Spider-Man 2099

There are some other cards included in each of the Magic: The Gathering Spider-Man sets that could work well with Spider-Man 2099. Romantic Rendezvous could work well with Lyla, Holographic Assistant in play, but there are other cards that can pump Spider-Man 2099’s power. For different costs, Unstable Experiment and Beetle, Legacy Criminal can both add counters to Spider-Man 2099. Stegron the Dinosaur Man and Double Trouble can increase the card’s power even further, though this only lasts until the end of the player’s turn.

Spider-Man 2099’s effect requires cards to be played from anywhere other than the hand, which some other Spider-Man cards can assist with. Electro’s Bolt, featuring the iconic Spider-Man villain, and Spider-Islanders both have effects that allow players to cast them from the graveyard if they had been discarded during that turn. These can trigger the Spider-Man 2099 effect, setting players up to cause a lot of damage.

In keeping with the cross-dimensional and time-traveling capabilities of Miguel O’Hara, Spider-Man 2099 synergizes well with some of the Doctor Who Magic: The Gathering cards. In a Temur deck, Spider-Man 2099 could work well with The Thirteenth Doctor, given that her Paradox effect has the same trigger as Spider-Man 2099 and can be used to add more counters to him. Danny Pink is also a good draw engine that can work well with the Spider-Man 2099 and Lyla, Holographic Assistant combo, generating a lot of counters from drawing more cards.

Another card that could fit with the technologically-advanced universe that Miguel O’Hara inhabits is The Reality Chip. If attached to a creature, players are able to look at cards and play them from the top of their library. This is perfect for triggering Spider-Man 2099’s ability, letting players damage their opponents directly. With the many counters they are likely to accumulate, this combo could help them to win plenty of games.

Fans of Spider-Man 2099 and his universe may get a lot of value out of the upcoming Spider-Man and Spider-Man Eternal Magic: The Gathering sets. Being able to form strategies while keeping the cards on theme could be a major incentive for fans of both Spider-Man and MTG. Whether they use all the Spider-Man 2099 cards or devise another Magic: The Gathering combo, the cards from the upcoming sets could be a major threat in many decks.
