Dungeons & Dragons X Stranger Things TTRPG Is Up For Preorder

Dungeons & Dragons has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and part of that is due to the success of Stranger Things. The TTRPG features heavily in Netflix’s nostalgia-tinged supernatural series–not only do we see the characters play the game, they even give many of the otherworldly creatures they encounter names pulled from Dungeons & Dragons lore. Soon, fans will be able to take part in the Stranger Things crew’s tabletop adventures with an all-new D&D crossover game, Stranger Things: Welcome to the Hellfire Club.

The game looks to be a streamlined version of D&D that comes with everything you need, is easy to set up, and includes adventures based on the campaigns made by Stranger Things character Eddie Munson. The final season of Stranger Things doesn’t premiere until November 26, but fans will be able to join the Hellfire Club on October 7. You can preorder the crossover game for $50 at Amazon.

    $50 | Releases October 7

Dungeons & Dragons Stranger Things: Welcome to The Hellfire Club takes its name from the in-universe D&D club run by Eddie Munson. Gameplay is based on Dungeons & Dragons and is designed for 3-5 players, accompanied by a Dungeon Master (DM). Rather than rolling up their own unique adventurers, players take on one of several pre-made party roles–which are based on the D&D characters played by Stranger Things’ characters like Nog the Dwarf, Lady Applejack, Erica’s Rogue, and Dustin’s Cleric–and embark on a series of four guided adventures based on the ones made by Munson.

Unlike the full version of D&D that relies on large rulebooks and the theater of the mind, Welcome to The Hellfire Club adopts a board game-style presentation more akin to HeroQuest, featuring numerous cards for spells, items, and monsters. There are also illustrated grid maps and punch-out tokens for each of the playable characters and monsters. Everything you need to play Dungeons & Dragons Stranger Things: Welcome to The Hellfire Club Adventure Game comes in the box, including:

    • Play Guide Booklet
    • Quick-Start Guide
    • Four Adventure Booklets
    • Four Handouts
    • Hellfire Club Poster & Poster Maps
    • Combat Tracker
    • DM Screen
    • 11 Dice
    • 91 Cards for Spells, Magic Items, Monsters
    • 72 Tokens for Player Characters and Monsters
    • 15 Character Sheets

These pieces are all rendered with a classic art style inspired by ’80s heavy metal and classic D&D illustrations. Dungeons & Dragons Stranger Things: Welcome to The Hellfire Club Adventure Game seems like it could be a perfect game for Stranger Things fans who enjoy TTRPGs, or anyone who wants to dip their toes into tabletop gaming with a more structured experience that’s easy to pick up and play.

The upcoming TTRPG isn’t the first Stranger Things board game. In 2023, prolific board game publisher CMON Limited released Upside Down, a cooperative strategy game for 2-4 players based on the first two seasons of the show. Stranger Things: Upside Down retails for $50 and is in stock at Amazon.

More Stranger Things Books, Merch, And More

While Stranger Things is nearing its conclusion, fans have plenty of other Stranger Things releases to check out, including numerous official books and graphic novels that flesh out the Stranger Things universe. There are even a couple of Stranger Things x D&D comic collections in trade paperback, including the newest miniseries. Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons: The Rise of Hellfire releases September 30 in paperback and is up for preorder for $20 at Amazon.

Looking for more tabletop games? Check out these new D&D and HeroQuest releases

As for D&D fans, there’s also the newly released Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons board game, which–as the title implies–puts a D&D spin on the award-winning horror-themed board game, Horrified. 1-5 players explore the dungeons of Undermountain and take on quests that pit them against iconic D&D monsters like The Mimic, The Beholder, The Displacer, and Red Dragon. The game was originally expected to launch August 10, but it’s already out–at Target at least–for $30. Amazon also has a store page for the game, though it’s not available to buy just yet. We had a chance to play the game ahead of launch, so be sure to check our Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons review if you want to learn more.

If you want to try the real thing, the best place to start is the recent D&D 2024 Edition Core Rulebooks set. The new Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual are all required to play the latest edition of D&D. If you’re looking for some pre-made adventures to follow along with, there’s the recent Dragon Delves Adventure Anthology that contains 10 modules designed for characters from levels 1-12. And if you want to expand your game even further with new classes, monsters, and and more, all set in Eberron campaign setting, you can preorder the upcoming Eberron: Forge of the Artificer Rules Expansion for $30 ahead of its August 19 launch date. Check out all the D&D 2024 book below.

Beyond these new D&D releases, tabletop fans looking for more themed adventures should also check out the new HeroQuest: The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack expansion that launches in August. This set of 10 adventures is designed by actor and TTRPG super fan Joe Manganiello. The box includes new cards, dungeon tiles, dice, and a metallic Black Dragon miniature. And just like Welcome to the Hellfire Club, The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness features a heavy metal aesthetic that’s perfect for the dark fantasy adventures Manganiello cooked up. Unfortunately, it’s currently sold out at Amazon, but hopefully we’ll see a restock soon.

Note that The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness requires the HeroQuest base game to play, which is available now for $88 (was $135), or the HeroQuest: First Light set that’s available for $50. As mentioned above, HeroQuest is a more streamlined, board-game-style TTRPG that is perfect for anyone who wants to try out TTRPGs or who prefers the more tactile, mechanics-driven experience of a tabletop game with the aesthetics and crunch of pen-and-paper games.
