Just in time for the darker autumn season, Netflix has unleashed a brand-new trailer for its horror-filled miniseries Wayward, which stars Hereditary icon Toni Collette. It’s been quite some time since the streaming giant has showcased scary shows, with the likes of Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass, and The Haunting of Hill House proving to be a big previous hit, which has left a thriller/horror-shaped hole in fans’ hearts…until now.
Wayward, which was originally called Tall Pines, but it was changed so that fans wouldn’t mix it up with Wayward Pines, is set in a seemingly idyllic town called Tall Pines, but, as residents soon learn, it has a sinister underbelly. The story revolves around police officer Alex Dempsey and his pregnant wife who move to the picturesque town, but not long after, Dempsey befriends two students from a school for “troubled teens” who are desperate to escape, which unearths the terrifying realization that the town isn’t what it seems, especially when it comes to the school’s headmistress Evelyn, played by Collette, where mysterious incidents involving her are popping up. Created by Mae Martin, a Canadian comedian, actor, and screenwriter who co-wrote and created the Netflix series Feel Good, Wayward stars Martin, Sarah Gadon, Sydney Topliffe, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Brandon Jay McLaren, Patrick J. Adams, and, of course, Collette.

Netflix Horror Series Wayward Gets First Sinister Trailer
The new Netflix trailer for its horror series, Wayward, offers up a taste of what viewers can expect when it releases next month. Even though the trailer doesn’t go too much into depth about its storyline, preferring to leave those aspects to viewers’ imagination for the time being, the sticky and unsettling atmosphere of Wayward certainly comes across very well. Scenes of a teenager running through the forest, seemingly being chased by someone or something, give a good indication that there will be plenty of heart-pumping moments.
Towards the end of the trailer, Collette can be seen welcoming a rather distressed student into the so-called academy by saying, “Welcome to Tall Pines. We think you’ll be very happy here.” And I think we all know by this stage that the poor teenager will be far from happy, judging by the overall tone of the trailer and Collette’s devious smile.
Without a doubt, Toni Collette has a knack for excellently portraying strange and complex characters, especially for her role as Annie in Hereditary, where she played a grieving mother grappling with grief and trauma, so fans of the movie and Collette should feel right at home with Wayward.
Wayward is a limited series that will premiere on Netflix on September 25. 2025.
