EA is currently hard at work developing a new entry in The Sims franchise, though, unfortunately for many, it’s not The Sims 5. It’s been quite a while since players saw a brand-new core entry in the smash-hit life sim franchise, and although The Sims 4 remains plenty popular, the wait has been long, and many fans are eager to see a new game.
While there are plenty of different life-sim games out there—each with its own style and gameplay, catering to fans’ various preferences—The Sims franchise is arguably the most iconic of all. Maybe because it’s been around for so long, or maybe because its engaging gameplay has stayed relevant over the years—either way, players keep coming back, especially to the latest entry (released in 2014), The Sims 4. In 2025, The Sims franchise hit 25 years in the industry, and players were treated to all kinds of activities, as well as the release of The Sims and The Sims 2 Legacy Collections for modern PCs. In addition to remakes and DLCs for existing titles, EA is currently working on a project for a new game, though it may not be what fans were expecting to see.

Although fans had already learned that EA’s next game wasn’t The Sims 5, there was still some hope that the studio had plans to develop it. But in a recent interview with Variety, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele shut down those hopes, saying the studio is “hard at work and feverishly developing” a multiplayer spin-off of The Sims.
The Sims Franchise Is Getting a Multiplayer Spin-Off
The reason for not developing The Sims 5 yet is that EA doesn’t want players to have to give up everything they’ve bought and built in The Sims 4, as “that is not player-friendly.” It’s worth keeping in mind the large number of content expansions EA has released for The Sims 4 over the last 10 years. Miele also explained that this new multiplayer platform in development will come alongside an overhaul of the “base technology and the base user experience on the core game.”
Miele kept most details under wraps but teased great things coming for The Sims fans in the spin-off, even confirming that whatever the new project is, it’ll have a mobile version. While some fans may be disappointed that EA is not bringing a new core Sims game, the developer assures fans that the upcoming projects aim to create an “ecosystem” and a “universe of multiple Sims experiences.”
