Summary
- Breathing powers make attacks potent, but lack logical consistency and realism.
- Tanjiro’s prophetic nose ability to predict the future seems over-the-top.
- Characters face nonsensical moments like Kagaya letting his family die in an explosion.
Like most shonen anime, Demon Slayer has its fair share of questionable moments that will make many fans scratch their heads. For what it’s worth, these nonsensical things will be the last thing on a viewer’s mind as they witness Ufotable’s brilliant adaptation. Most will be preoccupied with the incredible animation and the high-action fights.
However, many fans have still debated the intricacies of Demon Slayer‘s universe. The series relies on bombastic battles to keep fans engaged, which is why the storytelling and world building may not be as infallible as fans assume. Here are a few aspects of the universe that test the suspension of disbelief.
The Simple Act Of Breathing Being So Powerful
One Of The Hardest Power Systems To Stomach
As cool as Breathing Styles may be, the logic of these complex swordfighting techniques can be hard to digest. Somehow, the simple act of controlling one’s breathing is enough for weak attacks to turn into potent ones that can behead seemingly invulnerable abilities.
Some Breathing Styles can even give users supernatural abilities, such as Flower Breathing’s Final Form, Equinoctial Vermilion Eye. Logic is something that viewers must keep in the backseat here, since it’s clear that these Breathing Styles are just an excuse to add a ton of flourish to a demon slayer’s moves.
Tanjiro’s Prophetic Nose
Smelling The Future Is Where Most People Draw The Line
One of Tanjiro’s weirder abilities is the power his nose wields. Having an ultra-sensitive nose is fine, but Tanjiro can use the power of scent to discover lost allies and uncover a demon presence, which can be hard to digest.
Perhaps the most over-the-top ability of Tanjiro’s nose is the ability to predict the future, something that he develops during his training in the Swordsmith Village arc. While his predictive abilities are of huge help in a fight, smelling the future is a ridiculous concept that makes no sense, no matter what spin fans try to give it.
Kagaya Lets His Wife And Daughters Die In An Explosion Meant To Kill Muzan
A Brutal Move That Was Not Necessary
Kagaya Ubuyashiki is the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps who hates Muzan with all his being. His entire family was cursed by this villain, causing them to have short lifespans that are wracked by diseases.
In a bid to take out Muzan, he lured him to his home, which was rigged with powerful explosives that would’ve killed lesser villains. However, one thing fans never understood was why he didn’t save his wife and daughters from the same fate. They didn’t need to die because of his vengeful machinations.
Tamayo Never Experiments On Genya
Should Have Been The Test Subject For A Cure To Turn Demons Into Humans
Tamayo is one of the few demons around who has a conscience, and is hard at work trying to find a cure that reverts demons to their human form. It’s a noble goal, but there’s one character in the story who coul have helped her with this goal, only for them to never meet.
Genya lacked the power of a Breathing Style, but made up for it by ingesting demon flesh to enter a half-demon state that enhanced his strength. Tamayo should have experimented on his blood, but no one thinks of bringing both parties together to achieve this goal.
Tanjiro Becomes Unreasonably Powerful In No Time
While it’s only natural for a shonen hero to become stronger over the course of their adventure, Tanjiro’s strength increasing innumerable times throughout the series can be hard to digest. His transformation from a helpless boy into a fierce demon slayer happens in no time.
Without even using a Breathing Style natural to him, he was able to take out a former Lower Rank Six Demon Moon. His strength spikes also arrived courtesy of the Sun Breathing style and the Demon Slayer Mark. Tanjiro was unaware of both things for a long time, only to channel them at convenient times to become so powerful that he can fight on the same level as a Hashira.
Inosuke’s Swords Don’t Break Despite His Horrid Treatment
Smashing Swords Into Rocks Shouldn’t Lead To Picturesque Serrations
Inosuke is one of the goofiest characters in the series, who loves calling people by their wrong name and hiding his beautiful face behind a boar mask. He also uses serrated blades, which most people assume arrive in this perfect shape right out of the gate.
However, when his swords are restored, it’s revealed that Inosuke whacks his blade against a hard surface to create serrations that look perfect, somehow. In reality, this should obliterate the durability of his swords and turn them into a liability in combat.
Zenitsu’s Impossible Reflexes
Getting Knocked Out Shouldn’t Make Someone Ultra-Powerful
Zenitsu may be entertaining, but the fact that he must get knocked out to become stronger is ridiculous. Demons demand a fighter’s attention every step of the way, so it’s ridiculous that this demon slayer becomes stronger after losing the ability to actively react to threats in combat.
Instead, all his senses are heightened as he uses his mastery over Thunder Breathing’s first form to take out the strongest demons in the series. It’s a testament to how likable Zenitsu is as a character that no one questions these moments all that much, accepting the fact that his natural reflexes are really that strong.
No One Wears Armor
Given How Deadly Demon Attacks Are, Protection Would Be Prudent
The overbearing threat of demons is hammered in time and again throughout the series. Their brute strength, coupled with their Blood Demon Art, is enough to decimate wide swaths of the population with ease.
Despite being intimately familiar with their strength, it’s downright puzzling that no character in Demon Slayer wears armor in battle. One would assume that a demon’s sharp claws and bludgeoning strikes would be easier to handle with protection, even if it may hinder a demon slayer’s effectiveness in combat.
