Two Rebuild Of Evangelion Movies Are Finally Returning To Blu-Ray

The first two movies in the Rebuild of Evangelion series are finally getting new Blu-ray editions on October 14. Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone and Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance are up for preorder for $30 each at Amazon. Both films have been out of print for a long time in the US, as the most recent editions launched back in 2010-11.

Hopefully Evangelion: 3.33 gets a reprint next, because then fans can easily buy the entire Evangelion saga on Blu-ray. At the moment, only the DVD version of 3.33 is easily attainable. Meanwhile, the final film in the series, Evangelion: 3.0+1.11, received a new Blu-ray Steelbook Edition last summer, and it’s available for only a couple bucks more than the standard edition thanks to a deal at Amazon. Evangelion 3.0+1.11 is also the only movie in the series on 4K Blu-ray in the US–though you’re limited to a Collector’s Edition for $55 (was $80).

Rebuild of Evangelion released in four parts from 2007-2021 as a retelling of the beloved ’90s series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is available on Blu-ray for $40 (was $60) at Amazon.

Take a closer look at the Blu-ray and DVD editions of Rebuild of Evangelion below. Each movie is packaged in display-worthy slipcases, and several of these editions also include small art booklets. We also included an overview of two different Neon Genesis Evangelion anime box sets and the original manga.

    $30 | Releases October 14

The first part of the Rebuild saga, Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, is an almost shot-for-shot remake of the first six episodes of the ’90s anime, but with new animation, and a few seemingly minor differences that have big payoffs further down the line. This version of the film has both Japanese and English audio tracks and English and Spanish subtitles. For the bonus features, you’ll get a booklet, a vibrant slipcase, and numerous on-disc extras:

    Evangelion 1.11 Blu-ray Bonus Features:

    • Art Booklet
    • Rebuild of Evangelion: 1.01 (Shiro Sagisu version)
    • Rebuild of Evangelion: 1.01 (Joseph-Maurice Ravel version)
    • Angel of Doom Music Video
    • Teasers, Trailers, TV Commercials

    $30 | Releases October 14

Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance retells episodes 8-23 of the original anime series, but it makes bigger deviations from that story, and it introduces the new character of Mari Illustrious Makinami. The Blu-ray release comes with English and Japanese audio tracks and English and Spanish subtitles.

Evangelion 2.22 is packaged in the same display-style slipcase and includes a few on-disc extras.

    Evangelion 2.22 Bonus Features:

    • Rebuild of Evangelion: 2.02
    • Remixed Scene: I Would Give You Anything Noguchi version
    • Deleted Scenes
    • Trailers

    $22.49 (was $30)

Part 3 of Rebuild of Evangelion saw the storyline drift even further way from the events of the anime continuity, as this film told a completely original story. Set 14 years later and focusing heavily on the character of Kaworu, Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo introduced even more new characters and Eva mechs.

As mentioned, the Blu-ray edition of Evangelion 3.33 isn’t sold in the US these days, but the DVD edition does include some cool extras like a 54-page art booklet and several featurettes. Plus, it’s packaged with a slipcase that matches the Blu-ray editions of the first two films.

    Evangelion 3.33 Bonus Features:

    • 54-page Art Booklet
    • Evangelion: 3.333 Breakdown
    • Trailers & TV Commercials
    • Trailer Outtakes
    • Imageboards featurette
    • Works in Process featurette

    $22 (was $37) | Limited Edition Steelbook

It took almost a decade for the fourth and final Rebuild of Evangelion film to make its way to theaters, but it was worth the wait. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is a grand finale that received critical acclaim upon release as it wraps up the entire Neon Genesis Evangelion saga satisfactorily. Special features on this edition include promotional reels, trailers, and animated messages.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is available on standard Blu-ray in two editions. The Limited Edition Steelbook is discounted to $22, and the standard edition with a slipcover is $19.73.

The special features disc comes with the same content regardless of which edition you buy.

    Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0

    • Evangelion: 3.0(-46h)
    • Evangelion: 3.0(-120min.)
    • Rebuild of Evangelion: 3.0+1.11
    • [Current Evangelion]
    • Message for Kinro
    • Message for Ann
    • Stage Greetings
    • Trailers, Promo Reels, TV Commercials

    $55 (was $80) | Collector’s Edition

Thrice Upon a Time also received an $80 Collector’s Edition when it launched in physical format in late 2023. This three-disc set includes the film on 4K Blu-ray as well as the two standard Blu-ray discs from the other editions. The special features are displayed in 1080p resolution.

The Collector’s Edition is packaged in an oversized box with a slipcase. Here’s the list of collectibles you’ll find in the box:

    Evangelion 3.0 + 1.11 Collector’s Edition Bonus Features:

    • 28-page booklet Art Book
    • 16.5″ x 11.7″ Poster
    • 5 Character Art Cards
    • Special Features Blu-ray Disc

The poster is the same artwork that was later used for the Limited Edition Steelbook. But instead of a steelbook case, the Collector’s Edition has a fold-out portfolio case for the three discs.

    $40 (was $60)

Before you dive into Rebuild of Evangelion, you should watch (or rewatch) the original 26-episode anime series first. It’s a thrilling ride featuring timeless ’90s animation, giant robots, heady themes, and a killer soundtrack.

The Complete Series Blu-ray box set includes every episode with English audio and the original Japanese audio with subtitles. Along with the 26 episodes, you’ll get over five hours of bonus features, including two movies on Blu-ray. The first Evangelion film, Death (True), serves a recap of the events of the series, and The End of Evangelion is a retelling of the final two episodes.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Blu-ray Box Set Features:

    • All 26 episodes
    • Slipcover
    • 2 Movies: Death (True) & The End of Evangelion
    • Animatics
    • TV Commercials & Trailers
    • Music Videos
    • Additional featurettes

    $120 | Region-free, ships from Amazon UK

It’s substantially more expensive than the standard edition Blu-ray box set, but the Limited Edition Reissue is in stock on Amazon for $120. This region-free Blu-ray set comes with free shipping and is sold by Amazon UK–but you purchase it through Amazon’s US storefront.

The Limited Edition includes The Complete Series with the newer dub–the same one in the standard edition–but it also comes with the original ADV dub. As a result, the Limited Edition is an 11-disc collection and contains over seven hours of bonus features.

The discs are packaged across three cases that can be displayed in a hardshell collector’s box. This is the Limited Edition Reissue, so it doesn’t come with all of the extra collectibles from the original Crunchyroll exclusive. Beyond the discs/cases, the only extra item in the box is a replica poster of a UK promotional campaign.

    $40

Neon Genesis Evangelion’s iconic soundtrack is available in a beautiful vinyl box set for $40 at Amazon. It also includes MP3s of each track, in case you want to listen to the music on the go.

Get Omnibus Editions of Vol. 1-5

While the anime series and films are the best way to enjoy Neon Genesis Evangelion, don’t sleep on the manga either. The original run is collected across five budget-friendly paperbacks, with each omnibus compiling three of the original trade paperback volumes.

Not only are you getting a beautifully illustrated retelling of the Neon Genesis Evangelion story, but you also get extra context as several characters are given more time to shine with the expanded narrative.
