This list contains spoilers up to the Wano arc.
Summary
- Some Devil Fruit abilities in One Piece are easily countered, such as Apoo’s Sound Sound Fruit.
- Kalifa’s Bubble Bubble Fruit can be countered by popping the bubbles with water or wind.
- Monet’s Snow Snow Fruit weakness is fire, making her vulnerable to heat-based attacks.
When a character in the world of One Piece obtains a Devil Fruit, it will automatically make them much stronger than the average human, considering they will have a brand-new ability to make use of in and out of battle. With that being said, though, not all of these fruits are created equal, so while characters like Luffy may have hit the jackpot with their Devil Fruits, not everyone has been so lucky.
In fact, there have been several abilities seen throughout the series that, while effective in their own way, can easily be counteracted by an opponent. Very often, this encourages the user to get creative with how they utilize their unique powers, considering they will need to go to extra lengths in order to avoid being outplayed by the enemy. These are the Devil Fruit abilities seen in One Piece so far that are among the easiest to counter due to their glaring weaknesses.
Sound Sound Fruit
So Long As Someone Blocks Their Ears, Apoo’s Sound Attacks Will Be Ineffective
Apoo has a pretty unique fighting style that involves him playing music notes that will enter a person’s body before then blasting them from the inside out with explosive attacks. As Luffy and Zoro come to find out first-hand, these abilities can be absolutely devastating for those who are unprepared, but thankfully, there’s a pretty easy counter to Apoo that can render his fruit more or less useless in battle.
So long as the target is covering their ears, Apoo will need to try extra hard for his fruit to take effect. Additionally, the range of the music also matters a lot, since Apoo’s enemies need to be in close proximity for them to be affected, meaning that there’s more than one way to escape his deadly influence.
Bubble Bubble Fruit
Kalifa’s Bubbles, While Dangerous, Are Also Easy To Pop
When face-to-face with a tough opponent, Kalifa’s go-to strategy is always to smother her foe with a barrage of bubbles that will slowly sap away their energy. The truth is, though, for this Devil Fruit ability to work to its full effect, there are many requirements that need to be met. For example, the bubbles are best used in an enclosed space where Kalifa’s target won’t be able to escape, since they would be pretty useless on a wide open battlefield where it would be much harder to concentrate them on a single foe.
The biggest counter, however, is to simply use water to wash the bubbles away. Not only will this keep Kalifa’s projectiles at bay, but it will also restore the victim’s stamina after they have been targeted. Even wind will be able to blow away the bubbles so long as the gust is strong enough, so it’s fair to say that if Nami and Kalifa ever encounter one another again in the future, Nami would have a much better chance of holding her own with her new and improved Clima-Tact.
Shadow Shadow Fruit
Moria’s Loyal Army Of Zombies Can Be Taken Down With Salt
When Luffy and the gang runs into Moria after entering Thriller Bark, it’s not long before they realize that this former Warlord of the Sea is actually extremely lazy, but there’s a reason why this is the case. Thanks to his Devil Fruit, Moria is able to extract shadows, which he can then infuse into corpses to create his own makeshift army. This means that he doesn’t even need to lift a finger to take out anyone who trespasses his ship.
This may sound absurdly powerful on paper, but Oda ensured to give this fruit some pretty significant weaknesses to help balance it out, with the most obvious being its lack of resistance to salt. It’s common knowledge that Devil Fruit users are heavily affected by seawater, which is why they are unable to swim. So, being able to pour some saltwater onto any of Moria’s undead servants will shut them down in a matter of seconds. Considering Moria isn’t much of a fighter himself, he entirely relies on his shadows to do his dirty work, so taking them out in one fell swoop essentially leaves him a sitting duck.
Slow Slow Fruit
Fire Foxy’s Beams Back At Him To Slow Down His Attacks
Despite being played up as somewhat of a comic relief character when he’s introduced early in the story, Foxy actually possesses a pretty strong Devil Fruit, but it’s one that Luffy was eventually able to counter after some quick thinking. The ability itself allows Foxy to shoot out beams from his hands that will slow down anyone and anything he manages to catch in the blast. While this proved a little troublesome for Luffy to begin with, he soon realized that the easiest way to get around this was to simply fire the beams back at the user.
As a result, he hid a small mirror in his boxing glove, which allowed him to ricochet the beams straight back at Foxy, slowing him down to a crawl in the process. If someone doesn’t have a mirror on them at all times, though, then all they need to do is simply clobber Foxy’s arms hard enough until he’s unable to use them so that he has no way of firing off his beams.
Hollow Hollow Fruit
Perona’s Ghosts Won’t Work On People Who Are Already Pessimistic
Admittedly, Perona’s fruit is one that is easily counted by some characters, but not so much by others. That being said, though, individuals who have a lack of self-confidence and are somewhat pessimistic in their general outlook on life can remain completely unaffected by Perona’s Hollow Ghosts, which are primarily designed to drain the optimism and emotion of anyone that they encounter.
This weakness was exploited by Usopp, who, being the coward that he is, was able to resist the ghosts just from his own pessimism alone. Simply put, if somebody already has a pretty bleak mindset, Perona’s attempts to make them feel even more inadequate simply won’t work as intended.
Swim Swim Fruit
Nobody Can Miss A Gangster Dressed In Pink Swimming Through The Floor
Senor Pink is one of Doflamingo’s goons who engages in a long and chaotic battle with Franky at roughly the midpoint of the Dressosa arc. From first glance, this guy may seem like little more than a joke, but not only does he have an oddly emotional backstory, he even comes equipped with a pretty bizarre Devil Fruit that lets him swim through walls and floors.
When Senor Pink uses his ability, though, he can’t always obscure himself while swimming, as he still needs to perform big lunges to actually accelerate. Pair this with the fact that he moves at a rather sluggish speed, and the easiest way to counter him is to simply look out for where he is before then moving out of the way or onto another platform. Sure, this may be easier said than done for some of the bigger and bulkier characters, but most people in the world of One Piece are mobile enough to steer clear of Senor Pink anytime he throws out this oddball ability.
Calm Calm Fruit
Corazon’s Barrier Won’t Protect Him From Receiving Damage
- User: Donquixote Rosinante / Corazon
The Calm Calm Fruit’s ability is one that’s very situational. Being able to create a soundproof barrier makes this fruit especially useful for sneaking and espionage missions, but Corazon will still be clearly visible when using it. Because of this, Corazon’s enemies can easily break the effects of the fruit if they make physical contact with him, since the barrier won’t be able to protect him from incoming damage.
Of course, the hardest part is actually finding him, considering his voice and footsteps will be completely silent, but it’s very easy to break the fruit’s illusion after laying eyes on the user. Additionally, the sound barrier itself is also fairly small, so the closer people are to Corazon, the harder it will be for him to use it without anyone noticing.
Snow Snow Fruit
Monet’s Snow Abilities Can Be Prevented By Using Fire Attacks
Though Devil Fruit abilities can get very weird and wacky, their weaknesses can sometimes end up being pretty obvious, especially if they are connected to a natural element. In the case of Monet, who was in possession of the Snow Snow Fruit, all it took was a quick blast from Nami’s Heat Egg to protect herself against Monet’s attacks entirely, since she struggles to deal any kind of damage when being blasted by fire.
While fire can obviously come from a person’s Devil Fruit powers, it can also be generated through the use of technology. So, there are many ways to prepare for Monet’s Devil Fruit if someone knows about her beforehand. As was made clear by Kin’emon in the Punk Hazard arc, some sword-wielders will even be able to create heat with nothing but their own blade. So, needless to say, there are many characters within the One Piece world who can directly counter Monet and her frosty abilities.
