Call of Duty’s battle against hackers continues, and Activision has announced some major updates to the game’s Ricochet anti-cheat for Season 5 and beyond. The publisher also confirmed legal action taken against several cheat makers.
Season 5 of Black Ops 6 and Warzone arrives on August 7, and the update will include the rollout of two PC-based security features: TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) is a hardware-based security feature built onto CPUs or motherboards to verify that the PC’s boot process has not been tampered with, while Secure Boot makes sure a PC can only load trusted software when Windows starts.
Activision says these two new features will help Ricochet “ensure that players are starting the game from a secure and cheat-free foundation.”
PC players without TPM 2.0 enabled may receive an in-game notification indicating their system does not meet the new security requirements when launching applicable Call of Duty games. However, the publisher says it won’t be enforcing this or requiring the use of either setting during Season 5, but both TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot will be required when Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches later this year.
The publisher has also provided detailed instructions for PC players to help ensure they’re ready to play Call of Duty in Season 5 and beyond.
In addition to the new security measures, the Ricochet anti-cheat team continues to target the cheat makers. Activision says it has targeted 22 additional individuals responsible for developing and selling cheats, and many of the cheat makers have already complied.
“Those who remain non-compliant or resurface under new aliases will face further action,” the publisher says.
Cheating isn’t all about hacks, though. Call of Duty is already targeting accounts who are boosting/teaming in order to protect the integrity of the game’s competitive Ranked Play modes. Ricochet now has dedicated detection tools for spotting boosting and teaming, and the anti-cheat team has already permanently banned accounts where boosting made up the majority of their recent in-game activity.
Activision also reminds players about account safety. It recommends that players make sure their email is up to date on their account. The publisher also recommends enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on their Activision accounts, and suggests that two-factor authentication may become a requirement for all users in the future.
