It’s one of the oldest stories around: someone wants revenge on someone else, and they’ll do anything to get it. Dying Light: The Beast, the latest entry in the Dying Light franchise, continues this trend and features revenge as a key central motif. Kyle Crane seeks revenge on The Baron, a sinister figure who kept him captive and subjected him to bizarre, life-altering experiments. The Dying Light: The Beast development team took a careful approach, incorporating the theme of revenge into the story but not making it the sole dominating factor in Kyle and the Baron’s multi-layered relationship.
“Revenge is always a tricky choice,” said Dying Light: The Beast quest designer Kalina Sobierajska in a conversation with Game Rant. “If it’s not handled carefully, it can make the hero seem unsympathetic or even ruthless.” The Techland team had a fine line to walk, as his pursuit of revenge against the Baron needed to be a key element of Kyle Crane’s character but not overwhelm him. Players still needed to see bits of the old Kyle they remembered from previous Dying Light games peeking out between the cracks of his newer, darker persona.
Kyle And The Baron Are “Two Sides Of The Same Coin”
On the surface, Kyle Crane and the Baron seem as different as can be. Kyle is a gruff, grizzled survivor, permanently changed by his time in captivity, with access to a new “Beast Mode” mechanic that makes him more ferocious in combat than ever before. The Baron, on the other hand, is an aristocratic, well-groomed ‘big pharma’ type, characterized by his fondness for suits and jewelry and his elegant manner of speaking. But, beneath the surface, Sobierajska suggested they may be “two sides of the same coin.”
Dying Light: The Beast Is A Revenge Story, But It’s Also So Much More
Dying Light: The Beast protagonist Kyle Crane’s desire for revenge against The Baron deeply motivates him and forms a core element of his journey throughout Dying Light: The Beast. But, ultimately, Kyle is more than just a guy with a thirst for vengeance. He’s a survivor. He’s an explorer. He’s a parkour master. He builds relationships with his ally Olivia and other characters he encounters in Castor Woods. He takes on quests that even lead to the occasional moment of levity in an otherwise grim zombie apocalypse setting.
Sobierajska explained how the game moves beyond a revenge story to ask key questions about the nature of humanity:
“That’s why it was important to add additional layers to the relationship between Baron and Kyle. These layers allow the player to see their connection in a more complex light and, in the end, question who the real “beast” in the story is.”
Who is the true “beast”? Is it Kyle Crane? The Baron? Both? Neither? One thing seems certain: that is one of the many key questions that players can discover the answer to as they delve into the depths of Castor Woods alongside Kyle when Dying Light: The Beast releases on September 19, 2025.
