Summary
- Players can become most RPG classes through training, except for mages.
- Games like Ni no Kuni and Dragon’s Crown offer strong mage characters.
- Titles like Forspoken and Dragon Age: The Veilguard provide epic mage gameplay.
With enough training, it’s possible to become an archetype of many typical RPG classes. Players can become Rangers if they practice using bows. They can train with swords to become a Warrior or any other sword-based class in an RPG. Sadly, the one thing players can never become is a mage, as magic is not real.
That’s why so many players gravitate toward mage classes in RPGs as a sort of wish fulfillment. For players who fall into that camp, these RPGs will give them access to the strongest mage builds imaginable and allow them to wipe the floor with their enemies in a godlike display of power. They will be ranked based on how powerful players can become as mages.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch
You’re A Wizard, Oliver
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is a Pokemon-like game wherein players can capture little critters, Familiars, to fight their battles for them. Unlike most monster-catching RPGs, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch allows characters like the star, Oliver, to participate in battle.
He’s a wizard in training, and as such, Oliver will progressively get new spells as the story goes along. These spells will usually turn the tide of random battles, especially toward the game’s latter half, making the point of Familiars seem less relevant thanks to Oliver’s immense power.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
Create A Co-Op Party Of Mutants
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order offers players dozens of characters to play as from the Marvel catalog, with more being added as the story progresses. There are mage-like characters, including Crystal, Doctor Strange, Phoenix, Scarlet Witch, and Storm.
Of those five, Phoenix is number one thanks to her fiery skills, and Storm is a close second with her mastery over nature. Players can create a party of four in co-op to make an unstoppable squad of elemental powerhouses.
Dragon’s Crown
Old School Dungeons & Dragons
Dragon’s Crown is an old-school homage to classic Dungeons & Dragons games, like Capcom’s work in the 90s. Players can choose between six character classes, including Fighter, Amazon, Wizard, Elf, Dwarf, and Sorceress.
The Sorceress and Wizard are both glass cannons when it comes to magic, as they can cast spells but won’t last long if they get up close and personal. The Sorceress can cast magic or conjurings, while the Wizard is more focused on spells. Both are good picks for the game as long as players keep their distance from enemies.
Immortals Of Aveum
Blasting Finger Guns
Immortals of Aveum didn’t make a huge splash when it launched in 2023, which is a shame because it’s one of the weirdest shooters in decades. It may be odd, but it’s good too, as all guns are replaced with magic that the hero, Jak, can equip. Players will switch between projectiles like machine guns and shotguns, and counter with a protective shield.
While it’s not the most cut-and-dry RPG, the role-playing systems that are present are surprisingly deep. Gaining skill points and getting new gear will only make Jak stronger. While it does have flaws, such as a story that can be hard to understand with too many terms to remember, Immortals of Aveum is a fun game for players who want to dominate the playing field with magical finesse.
Forspoken
Magic And Parkour Mixed
Forspoken is an isekai that takes a New York City girl, Frey, on a wild ride through a fantasy realm. She’s one of the few characters who can cast magic in this world, and even though she is a mage in training, her starting spell roster is already mighty.
The more bosses she takes down, the more intricate her spell weaving will become. It’s not hard to look cool and unstoppable in battle in Forspoken, which is the best part of the game, along with the open-world parkour systems and visually stunning action.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Rook’s Move
Dragon Age: The Veilguard may not have stoked the flames of every fan, but those who loved it really loved it. One of the best parts was the combat, as the main character, Rook, could start as a Warrior, Rogue, or Mage. As players progressed through their skill tree and story, they could unlock more advanced classes, like the Evoker for the Mage.
The Dragon Age series has always favored Mage classes, and it’s more apparent in Dragon Age: The Veilguard than ever before. Players will start Rook off with spells that feel like end-level content, only to get even stronger from there.
Avowed
Grimoires And Wands Lead The Way

Avowed
- Released
-
February 18, 2025
Avowed is a cut above a lot of action RPGs that have been released so far in 2025. The magic system, in particular, is something truly special. Players can unlock magic from their skill tree and equip spells like a typical RPG, which range from classic fire or ice spells.
Players can also wield Wands in Avowed, which strike foes with magical blasts, or Grimoires, which come pre-loaded with spells. Players can even dual-wield Grimoires and Wands to become the ultimate battle mage, ready for anything that crosses their path on the open-world road.
Fire Emblem: Awakening
A Tactical Advantage
Fire Emblem is a series where mage classes have always been strong against some of the toughest opponents in the game. They’re safer, as they can attack from a distance and have decent evasion skills, but if they are hit, it will be devastating. This is mostly true for every game but one, Fire Emblem: Awakening.
Players will create their avatar, a male or female strategist named Robin, and will begin as a Tactician class. This gives Robin mastery over Swords and Tomes, with Tomes encasing magical spells. Robin is decent with a blade but better with magic, plus they can become even stronger if they evolve into a Grandmaster. To bear witness to how powerful mages can absolutely dominate the battlefield in this tactical RPG, grab a 3DS and a copy of Fire Emblem: Awakening today.
