Judas was first revealed in late 2022, and while developer Ghost Story Games has been keeping a tight lid on the project since then, it has shared a few new details on it this week. Creative director Ken Levine has shared a dev log detailing how a major milestone on the game has been completed. To celebrate, the official key art for Judas has been revealed, which Levine says is inspired by the work of legendary movie poster artist Drew Struzan.
Similar to Struzan’s work on movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Big Trouble in Little China, the key art is designed to give players a look at the primary cast of Judas:
As for that previously mentioned milestone? Levine says that it was focused on the idea of villainy, a central feature in the game. As Levine explained, your actions in the game will attract members of the “Big 3” to be potential friends, but ignoring any of them will result in these key characters transforming into villains, gaining a new suite of powers to subvert your actions and goals in the process. You’ll have to decide who you want to focus your energy on, and who you might alienate along the way.
Levine also shared new details on how the game focuses on character, as the game will give you the chance to become emotionally invested in its cast as you get to know them better.
“In Judas, you’re going to get to know these characters intimately,” Levine explained in the dev log. “We want losing one of them to feel like losing a friend. We want to play with that dynamic, and we want that choice to be super hard. The Big 3 are all going to be competing for your favor and attention. They can bribe you, save you in battle, talk shit about the other characters, and share with you their darkest secrets. But eventually, you’ve got to decide who you trust and who you don’t.”
So when is Judas coming out? Levine isn’t ready to commit to a release date just yet, as he and the team want to “avoid having to change the date” after it is announced. What we do know about Judas is that the game will eventually launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and betrayal is a major theme in it. Set on a massive spaceship that has recently suffered some sort of disaster–and it’s hinted that the protagonist Judas is responsible for–players will have to find a way to survive at any cost.
While there are key differences, Judas is shaping up to be a spiritual successor to BioShock, a series that is currently experiencing a rocky development road with its next entry. BioShock 4 developer Cloud Chamber has been hit with layoffs, and former Diablo boss Rod Fergusson will be the new studio head, replacing Kelley Gilmore in that role.
