Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake has gone gold, way ahead of its much-awaited launch on October 30, 2025. Announced in June 2024, Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is an upgraded version of the original two games that came out in 1986 and 1987, respectively.
Following the success of 2018’s Octopath Traveler and 2022’s Live a Live, Square Enix gave the HD-2D treatment to its long-running Dragon Quest series. In November 2024, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake came out to highly positive reviews and also went on to become a commercial hit. Next, the Japanese gaming giant looks set to revive the remaining two games in the original Dragon Quest trilogy, with Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake‘s launch, completing the franchise’s HD-2D remake trifecta.
Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake Goes Gold, Inches Closer to Launch
In a Twitter post, the Dragon Quest franchise’s official account shared the news of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake going gold, putting to bed any possible doubts surrounding its timely launch across PC and consoles. This development milestone was notably achieved by the devs at ARTDINK and Square Enix, a full two months before the game’s October 30 release date. The announcement post also offered a look at Dragon Quest creator, Yuji Horii, and Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake Producer Masaaki Hayasaka posing with copies of the upcoming title. In the comments, several fans expressed their excitement about the game’s launch, whereas some bemoaned the devs using a game-key card for the Switch 2 port.
The fact that Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake was burned onto disc, with several weeks to go for its official rollout, shows the studio’s confidence in meeting the targeted window. At a time when it isn’t uncommon for projects to get delayed late in development, Square Enix’s latest sit-rep is an early but considerable feat to celebrate for fans. This also ensures that Dragon Quest‘s Erdrick Trilogy from the NES era will be available to play on current-gen systems no later than October.
Once Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake finally arrives, it will be interesting to compare its performance with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake‘s highly successful run. Earlier in 2025, devs revealed that the latter had crossed its sales expectations. Based on that, it seems fair to assume that they would want the upcoming remake to replicate that, if not go one step beyond.
