YouTuber and real-life lawyer Law By Mike has announced plans to sue Roblox over an alleged failure to properly protect children on its platform. Controversy is nothing new for the game, but it’s come under particular scrutiny in recent months amid a wave of lawsuits and public outcry against company leadership. Now, yet another party has joined the growing action against Roblox and its moderation policies.
Things have not been easy for the Roblox Corporation lately. Over 120,000 people have signed a petition for Roblox to remove its CEO, and the State of Louisiana opened a lawsuit against the company in mid-August, claiming it has not done enough to ensure the safety of underage users. The case is still ongoing, and Roblox has still performed remarkably well despite the controversy, but action against the platform keeps growing.
Lawyer and YouTuber Law By Mike Is Joining a Case Against Roblox
In a September 1 video, Law By Mike announced he was working with the legal team of another YouTuber, Schlep, to sue Roblox. While Schlep has not filed a lawsuit yet, Law By Mike and the other lawyers are currently raising awareness about the game’s alleged child safety issues and have suggested that formal legal action is incoming. The movement comes after multiple allegations that a lack of moderation makes it easy for criminals to talk to and potentially take advantage of minors on the platform. It brings to mind another lawsuit against Roblox over a 13-year-old girl’s kidnapping, and Law By Mike has encouraged anyone who has gone through similar experiences to reach out to his firm.
In the face of the rising legal action and negative press, the Roblox Corporation has asserted that its recent reputation does not accurately reflect its commitment to child safety. After the Louisiana Attorney General filed a lawsuit, Roblox pointed to 40 new tools to protect children that it has implemented over the past year. These include chat filters, more extensive parental controls, and limits on direct messages for users under 13. At the same time, Law By Mike’s video claims Roblox is not as secure as it has said it is.
In addition to the protections mentioned in its response to the Louisiana lawsuit, Roblox has announced changes to its adult content policies in the past week. The game is raising the age requirement for viewing restricted content as well as reducing the visibility of such experiences to underage users. It’s unclear how the platform’s ongoing legal challenges will proceed from here, though for now, Roblox is still seeing impressive player counts.
