Hollow Knight: Silksong players are taking to social media to share some serious gripes about the game, including its placement of benches, economy, and platforming design. In spite of these grievances, many fans currently discussing Hollow Knight Silksong online say they are enjoying the game overall.
As of this writing, the long-awaited Hollow Knight sequel has been out for just over 48 hours, having originally released at 10am EDT on September 4. The hype surrounding the game, combined with the lack of pre-orders, resulted in Hollow Knight: Silksong crashing all major storefronts for a few hours, thus making history as one of the rare titles that managed to do so. Now that the dust has settled, many early adopters have taken to social media to share their initial impressions.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Fans Have Issues With Benches, Rewards, and More
As part of this ongoing discussion, a vocal section of the community has shared several major gripes with the game, which largely tie to its difficulty, though some are also a bit broader. For instance, a number of players seem frustrated with the game’s economy, positing that farming rosaries in Hollow Knight: Silksong is basically a requirement from the get-go due to how much everything costs: tools, maps, items, even benches. At the same time, doing so is challenging because many enemies don’t drop rosaries, while exploration rewards are usually minimal as well, with even the most well-hidden rooms often not containing much in the way of valuables, frustrating some players.
The cost of unlocking checkpoints has invited particularly high scrutiny among the fandom. Some have been ridiculing it by calling Hollow Knight: Silksong checkpoints “anti-homeless benches,” referring to the practice of cities installing benches designed to prevent (presumably poor) people from lying on them. On the subject of benches, some fans also aren’t happy with their placement, arguing that Hollow Knight: Silksong boss runbacks are boring at best and frustrating at worst.
The bosses themselves have also been the subject of criticism for offering minimal rewards, which some feel goes against the classic metroidvania gameplay loop that rewards hard-fought victories with useful skills and tools more consistently. Other grievances voiced among fans include complaints about the lack of quest variety and the fact that many enemies do double damage, something that was a rarity in the original Hollow Knight.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Major Player Complaints Roundup
- High cost of unlocking benches
- Minimal exploration rewards
- Minimal rewards for killing enemies, including bosses
- Difficult platforming sections involving diagonal pogos
- Abundance of enemies doing double damage
- Abundance of difficult fights with no nearby benches / checkpoints
- Useful rewards like tools and crests being locked behind excessive fetch quests
Hollow Knight: Silksong‘s diagonal pogo has also incurred some criticism, especially given how many platforming segments rely on pulling it off in quick succession. Due to the game being brand-new, it’s possible these complaints will subside over time, as more people get comfortable with its mechanics and ultimately master them. The grievances themselves also don’t appear to have significantly impacted the overall opinion of the game, with Silksong presently holding over 31,000 “Very Positive” user reviews on Steam, as well as 4.85- and 4.4-star ratings on the PS Store and Xbox Store, respectively.
