Rumors around the PlayStation 6 have understandably been circulating for quite some time now. With the base PS5 having released close to five years ago, fans should expect to see more information about Sony’s next steps for its flagship console in the near future. A massive amount of uncertainty surrounds what the next generation of consoles might look like across all major platforms, yet some recent leaks give some potentially massive insight into what kind of experience the PlayStation 6 is looking to provide.
The PlayStation 6 has some impressive specifications to exceed following the launch of the PS5 Pro in 2024. While nothing is officially confirmed regarding the PlayStation 6, these leaks suggest that Sony has more than answered the call for these kinds of improvements. If accurate, the recent leaks and estimations concerning the PlayStation 6’s hardware would put the console in competition with some of the most high-end PCs, although this may come with some significant costs.

How the PlayStation 6 Allegedly Stacks Up Against the PlayStation 5 Pro
The recency of the PS5 Pro makes it one of the most powerful consoles on the market right now. By wowing fans with its focus on things like greater GPU performance and enhanced ray tracing capabilities, the PS5 Pro paints a positive picture in terms of the trajectory of Sony’s console hardware. A lot of the current discussion surrounding the potential performance of the PS6 has stemmed from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, which suggests an exciting estimation of what fans might have in store.
Specifically, the channel has analyzed projections for massive tech companies like AMD, which play a massive role in the development of major consoles across the likes of Xbox and PlayStation. Speaking of the PS6 in particular, the channel estimates that the PS6 may be twice as powerful as the PS5 Pro, which would be a massive achievement for console hardware at large.
To put this into perspective, Moore’s Law is Dead even suggested that the PS6 may have comparable performance capabilities to an NVIDIA RTX 4090. The 4090 currently sits as one of the most sought-after and powerful commercially available graphics cards, with these reports placing the PS6 as going toe-to-toe with some of the best PCs, graphically speaking. Other leaks have recently surfaced alongside this, with reputable sources like Kelper_L2 suggesting that AI-upscaling will play a major role in enhanced performance for Sony’s next console.
The PlayStation 6’s Rumored Performance Could Be Costly
It is believed that the PS6 will make full use of AMD’s Zen 5 CPU, being a major upgrade over the PS5 Pro’s Zen 2. This combines well with estimations that the PS6 will feature 20 teraflops compared to the Pro’s 16.7, as another example of graphical superiority. Interestingly, leaks suggest the possibility of 8K resolution via AI upscaling with the PS6, making it clear to see why the upcoming console is already drawing so much attention.
The Xbox Series X also uses the Zen 2 CPU while featuring around 12 teraflops, with the PS6’s rumored specs being a real statement of intent by Sony going into the next generation of consoles.
Of course, graphics cards are notoriously expensive, and hardware that can match the power of a 4090 is going to be quite costly. By current estimations, the price of the PS6 could exceed $1000 thanks to its top-of-the-line hardware. These estimations are subject to change, however, with the PS6’s launch being estimated to come around 2027 at the earliest. Depending on how the hardware industry evolves over the coming years, there is some hope that fans will not have to take such a hit to their wallets when the PS6 eventually rolls around. Either way, it already seems as if Sony is planning for a major technological leap compared to the PS5 Pro.
