Despite receiving generally positive reviews, Star Wars Outlaws wasn’t a commercial hit for Ubisoft, and the company blames the “choppy waters” around the Star Wars IP at the time for the game’s disappointing performance. Speaking to shareholders during a Q&A session of its 2025 general meeting, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot referenced the Star Wars brand and how recent projects had tarnished it.
“Outlaws was released at a time when the brand that it belonged to was in a bit of choppy waters,” Guillemot said (via IGN). Leading up to the release of Star Wars Outlaws, the IP had experienced turbulence with the poorly received Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker movie, the polarizing TV series The Acolyte, and the mixed reception to The Book of Boba Fett.
It’s worth noting that Outlaws was also criticized at the time, as the combination of a badly paced intro mission, various technical issues, and several bugs didn’t sit too well with players. Most of these issues have been addressed since the game launched last year, and the story of protagonist Kay Vess has continued with two DLC expansions, Wild Card and A Pirate’s Fortune.
While it’s unclear if Ubisoft will ever venture back into the Star Wars galaxy–especially now that it has a new division focused on its tentpole IP and led by Guillemot’s own son, Charlie Guillemot–there are several Star Wars games in development at other studios.
