Spider-Man: Panel By Panel Recreates His 1962 Debut And First Solo Comic

If you love Spider-Man comics or vintage Marvel in general, Spider-Man: Panel by Panel is one of the more interesting releases of 2025. Published on July 1, this nearly 400-page book meticulously reconstructs Spidey’s earliest comic book adventures. It’s the second book in Marvel’s Panel by Panel series, which debuted in 2021 with Fantastic Four.

    $45.30 (was $60)

Spider-Man: Panel by Panel focuses on the hero’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy No. 15 (August 1962) and his first solo title Amazing Spider-Man No. 1 (March 1963).

Each page and panel from first-print editions of the vintage comic books has been captured by award-winning photographer George Spear and upsized–essentially dedicating an entire page to each panel–and reconstructed by graphic designer Chip Kidd.

This oversized format lets readers examine all of the small details of the nuanced art by illustrator Steve Ditko and cover artist Jack Kirby.

The reconstructed comic books are accompanied by commentary from Kidd, Marvel editor Tom Brevoort, historian Peter Sanderson, and Sara Duke, a curator for the Library of Congress.

    $29.24 (was $40)

Amazon has Fantastic Four: Panel by Panel for $29.24, down from $40. Like the Spider-Man entry above, this 260-page hardcover book features super-sized panels that take up entire pages, showing off Jack Kirby’s art and Stan Lee’s writing from Fantastic Four No. 1 (November 1961).

Fantastic Four’s lavish reconstruction was also designed by Chip Kidd. The book contains commentary by Brevoort and Jack Kirby historian Mark Evanier.

With the Fantastic Four film out in theaters this month, you can also bring some of that action home with a collection of newly released Marvel Legends action figures. The Thing, the Human Torch, Mister Fantastic, and the Invisible Woman all look great, and the set is capped off with a Silver Surfer figure as well.
