Vagabond’s new oversized hardcover editions are printed on high-quality art paper, allowing Inoue’s beautiful and brutal visuals to really shine. One other cool aspect from a presentational perspective is that the covers have a textured finish, which we’ve seen in other Deluxe Edition manga, too. So far, 37 individual volumes of Vagabond–collected in 13 books–have been published.
Volume 4 rounds out the 2025 releases on October 21. The three-month gap between releases will continue into 2026, as Volume 5 is slated for January, followed by Volume 6 in April.
Volume 1 is the lengthiest of the six Definitive Editions at 728 pages, but the next four eclipse 600 pages: Vol. 2 is 632 pages, Vol. 3 is 616 pages, Vol. 4 is 664 pages, and Vol. 5 is 624 pages. Vol. 6 is slightly shorter at 584 pages.

If you’ve never read it, Vagabond follows the tale of Shinmen Takezou through 16th-century Japan. Also known as the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, the manga is a fictionalized account of his life and is based on Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel Musashi. A decades-spanning story, Vagabond focuses not only on the battles that made Musashi a legend but also on the more intimate moments of his life as he strives for enlightenment, through stunning art.
If you’re new to Vagabond and don’t want to drop $31-$55 on each book, most of the previously released paperbacks, which also collect three volumes each, can be purchased from Amazon for around $20 each. Volume 1 currently has a limited-time Amazon deal that drops the price to only $19. Note: Volume 13 is just one individual volume (Volume 37), so it’s not a VIZBIG Edition and is long out of print.
Vagabond has been on hiatus for a decade; Inoue shelved the project to focus on his health and pursue other projects. In the years since, Inoue has continued his basketball-themed series Real, which is an inspiring manga centered around wheelchair basketball that initially debuted in 1999. There’s no indication that Inoue will return to Vagabond in the future, but the current volumes are worth reading for their intricate plotting and mesmerizing visuals.
More Deluxe Edition Manga

Vagabond is just one of the beloved manga series to receive the Deluxe Edition treatment in recent years. Dark Horse Manga has produced handsome Deluxe Edition hardcovers for Berserk, Trigun, Hellsing, and several other notable series.
Multiple forthcoming Deluxe Editions from Dark Horse will expand the already impressive lineup. On July 29, Planetes Deluxe Edition Book 1 launches for $50. The epic sci-fi series was created by Makoto Yukimura, who is best known for Vinland Saga. Kodansha Comics has an ongoing Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition series, with Book 8 slated to release in September.
Amazon also recently opened preorders for Volumes 1 and. 2 Dark Horse’s Lone Wolf and Cub Deluxe Edition, Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima’s masterful samurai manga.
