After weeks of rumors and leaks, Activision has confirmed that both Modern Warfare 3 and Modern Warfare 2 will be removed from the Call of Duty HQ app today, July 29. With the launch of Black Ops 7 on the horizon, publisher Activision appears to be making way for its release and will be removing the 2022 and 2023 Call of Duty titles from the HQ app, but many fans are urging the studio to simply scrap the feature altogether.
The Call of Duty HQ app was introduced in 2022 and offered fans a way to access many of the current entries in the series. At the time of its launch, it combined Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone, with older titles such as Modern Warfare, Vanguard, and Black Ops Cold War also available in the app, but not directly tied to the launcher itself. 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 and 2024’s Black Ops 6 were also added to Call of Duty HQ upon their release, allowing fans to directly access all four titles without having to leave the app. Unfortunately, it proved to be more controversial than successful, as many are still calling for Activision to revert back to traditional releases for the series.

Poll: Call of Duty Fans Say They’re More Hyped for Battlefield 6 Than Black Ops 7
Battlefield 6 is outpacing Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in a recent fan excitement poll, and the gap between them is impressively large.
Earlier this month, a reliable leaker and data miner revealed that Activision was gearing up to make a major change to Call of Duty HQ. Now, less than one month later, the studio has taken to Twitter to announce that both 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 and 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 will be removed from the app on Tuesday, July 29, at 9 AM PT. After their removal, both titles will become standalone downloads, which means those still playing the shooters will need to redownload them on their platform of choice. Activision explained that any legacy content related to Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 modes within the main Call of Duty install will be automatically removed on August 7 to free up storage space.
Modern Warfare 2 and 3 Are Being Removed From Call of Duty HQ
In a follow-up tweet, Activision noted that the removal of the titles will not have an impact on Call of Duty: Warzone, which means any Modern Warfare 2 or 3 operators and weapons will still be available to use in the Battle Royale title.
Activision says the decision to remove both titles from the controversial Call of Duty HQ app is to “free up storage space,” but many are urging the studio to completely remove the feature. Twitter user InfoCoDES_ said they “hope this is the beginning of the end of COD HQ,” while GNGWarzone said, “It’s time to put Call of Duty HQ to bed, to be honest.” They then go on to state that they “see no benefit” from the app’s functionality. This is a sentiment that is shared by many, but with Black Ops 7 right around the corner, it looks like Activision is once again intending to tie its release to the Call of Duty HQ app.
This isn’t the only major change to come to the series this month either, as Activision recently added a new requirement to play Call of Duty. As of July 16, the studio requires all players to add their birthday to their Call of Duty account. Anybody who is under the age requirement will need parental permission or will risk having their entire account deleted.
