Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Arc System Work’s next head-turning fighting game, is putting a new spin on tag fighters by having players assemble their team over the course of a match.
A new Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls beginner’s guide video gives fans their best look yet at the game’s mechanics and systems. The video reveals that matches, which are played in a best-of-three rounds, don’t start with each player having their full four-player team assembled.
Instead, players start the match with two characters each. Executing a successful throw or landing certain special attacks in specific locations will cause a stage transition that also sees a player’s third, and when done again, fourth character join the team. Allies additionally will join a player’s team when knocking an opponent into a stage’s corner or upon losing a round.
Assembling a team quickly looks to be hugely important, as it increases a player’s max health and special gauge, as well as opens up more possibilities for using assist attacks. The video encourages players to try and assemble their team as fast as possible “in order to reach your team’s full potential.”
Other Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls mechanics are fairly par for the course for a tag fighter, with special moves, character assists, and more. Marvel Tokon will support both directional inputs and the ability to perform special moves with a single button and a direction, though moves performed with directional inputs will deal slightly more damage.
There are EX moves, super moves, and ultimate moves that use progressively more meter, with players able to chain together ultimate moves across multiple characters to deal devastating damage. As is the trend in many modern fighting games, mashing any of the main attack buttons will perform an auto combo, called a Link Attack. In terms of mobility, players have access to double jumps, launch attacks, and air dashes.
Each character will additionally have a unique attack, performed with the unique attack button. For Captain America, that means throwing his shield, while Iron Man’s unique attack is a flurry of repulsor blasts. Miss Marvel will extend her arms to pull herself around the arena. Star-Lord can change the element in his element gun. Dr. Doom summons an energy shield that blocks projectiles, and Storm summons a gust of wind.
It’s a lot to take in, but thankfully players will be able to go hands-on with Arc System Work’s new fighter very soon, as Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will be playable for the first time at this year’s Evo 2025 fighting game tournament. It will release on PlayStation 5 and PC and is currently slated to arrive in 2026.
