Pokemon: 8 Most Beloved Characters From The Anime, Ranked
The Pokemon anime is home to a vast array of likable individuals, but these particular characters are easily the most beloved.
These Pokemon use various methods to communicate verbally, with some being able to speak without much context provided. Since the very first episode, “Pokemon Emergency,” there have been talking Pokemon. Although this ability is not very common throughout the series, there are numerous examples of these elusive talking Pokemon.
Zoroark
Debut: The Island Of Illusions!
- Method Of Communication: Spoke by changing its form into a Nurse Joy
In an episode of the Black & White chapter of the anime, Ash and his friends encounter a Zoroark that is disguising itself as Nurse Joy. When in this form, Zoroark is able to communicate with other humans, but only while pretending to be Nurse Joy.
Zoroark, along with its pre-evolution Zorua, has the ability called Illusion, which allows it to change its appearance. In the games, this ability is used to deceive opponents into thinking they are facing a different Pokemon in battle. The anime takes this ability even further, demonstrating that Zoroark can also mimic human speech while in disguise.
Rotom
Debut: Alola To New Adventure!
- Method Of Communication: Human speech (through the Pokedex’s functions)
Rotom was first introduced in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl as a Pokemon that can inhabit various electrical devices. Trainers can catch it from a television in the Old Chateau located in Eterna Forest. Pokemon Platinum expanded on this concept by introducing different devices that Rotom could inhabit, allowing it to change type and moveset.

Rotom now controls the Pokedex and can speak through its voice functions, acting as a companion to Ash and a helpful tool on his adventures. In Pokemon Journeys: The Series, the Pokedex was replaced with a Rotom Phone, which serves a similar purpose, also able to talk in this unique manner.
Ralts
Debut: Do I Hear A Ralts?
- Method Of Communication: Telepathy
This Ralts is notable in the anime for being the first Pokemon with which Max, May’s younger brother, of the Hoenn region, formed a bond. Max first heard Ralts call out to him telepathically and discovered it was sick. He took the Pokemon to the nearest Pokemon Center, where it made a full recovery.
Once healed, Ralts demonstrated its power by using a Psychic attack to blast Team Rocket away. This is an example of a Pokemon using psychic abilities to communicate with humans. Although Max was too young to become a Pokemon Trainer himself, he promised the Ralts that he would return for it once he was old enough.
Manaphy
Debut: Pokemon Ranger And The Temple Of The Sea
- Method Of Communication: able to say a few words, such as “happy” and “I love you”

Entei
Debut: Spell Of the Unown: Entei
- Method Of Communication: Human Speech
In some Pokemon movies, it is more common for Pokemon to talk than in the regular series. In one instance, Entei is not portrayed as a real Pokemon. Instead, it represents Molly’s wishes to the Unown, which are to bring her father back.
Throughout the movie, Entei acts as Molly’s father and interacts with her, as well as with Ash and his friends, who are determined to uncover what is happening and rescue Ash’s mother, Delia, from Entei. Delia has been captured to serve as Molly’s mother. In the English dub of the movie, Entei’s voice is echoed to emphasize that it is an illusion. However, in the original Japanese version, there is no such filter, suggesting that this Entei can talk just like a human.
Slowking
Debut: The Power Of One
- Method Of Communication: Human Speech
In the second Pokemon movie, The Power of One, Slowking made its debut and served as a guide for the islands. It assisted Ash and his companions in their quest to find the spheres needed to calm the Legendary Birds, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, which were causing extreme weather disturbances.

Mewtwo
Debut: Mewtwo Strikes Back
- Method Of Communication: Telepathy
A well-known example of a talking Pokemon in the anime is Mewtwo, the main character in Mewtwo Strikes Back, the first Pokemon movie. In this instance, Mewtwo can communicate with humans telepathically, thanks to its immense psychic powers.
Mewtwo is a clone of Mew, created by Team Rocket. After escaping, Mewtwo sought to test its strength against powerful trainers, utilizing its army of cloned Pokemon. However, upon realizing that not all humans are malicious, it fled to a secluded island, determined to protect Pokemon from humans who wish to harm them.

Meowth
Debut: Pokemon Emergency!
- Method Of Communication: Human Speech

In Episode 70 of the anime, titled “Go West, Meowth,” the gang learns about Meowth’s past. Meowth taught himself to talk and walk like a human to impress a female Meowth named Mewozie.
The show does not explain how he acquired this ability, as no other Pokemon can do the same. This raises the question: Why can’t other Pokemon speak? Regardless of how, Meowth speaks flawlessly with a recognizable Brooklyn accent that has become synonymous with the character.
