Konami has confirmed that the online multiplayer mode for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Fox Hunt, will launch at some point this fall, but won’t be available on August 28 alongside the single-player component. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a remake of MGS3, and, for the most part, seems like it will be largely faithful to the original game. The main difference is the graphics, with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater featuring visuals that meet modern-day standards.
The original Metal Gear Solid 3 did not feature any kind of multiplayer, but that changed with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, an enhanced re-release of Snake Eater. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence introduced a new online multiplayer game mode simply called Metal Gear Online that allowed players to compete against each other in a variety of match types. The PS2 wasn’t exactly known for its online multiplayer functionality, and so Metal Gear Online didn’t take off in the way it may have if it came out in later generations, but it was still considered fairly strong and was generally well-received.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater isn’t bringing back the same Metal Gear Online mode from Subsistence, but it will have an online mode of its own. The Fox Hunt online multiplayer mode will be added to Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater in fall 2025 and will feature “hide-and-seek style gameplay based around central elements of camouflage and survival.” Additional details on Fox Hunt are unavailable at the time of this writing, but more information should come to light in the weeks ahead.
Fox Hunt launching after Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater‘s release date is a risky move. While this strategy has worked for some games in the past – namely with Grand Theft Auto 5‘s GTA Online mode and Red Dead Redemption 2‘s Red Dead Online – it’s unclear if gamers will want to return to Metal Gear Solid Delta for Fox Hunt. Snake Eater isn’t a terribly long game, and depending on how long it takes for Konami to release Fox Hunt, it’s entirely possible that fans will have already finished the game and moved on.
It will largely depend on how fun Fox Hunt is to play, but even then, it has to compete with the endless sea of live-service games that already have players hooked. Regardless, the Metal Gear franchise has a long history with online multiplayer modes, and it will definitely be interesting to see how Fox Hunt turns out when it’s added to Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater later this fall.
