The Continent in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 may not have a lot of humans to interact with, but there are a lot of Gestrals. Some Gestrals act as the merchants that players can interact with to either buy optional cosmetics or important gear to make the party stronger.
A few times early in the game, you’ll interact with a Gestral Merchant, and one or multiple of the items in the merchant will instead read, “Find an Expeditioner,” which you’ll need to do before unlocking that item for purchase. Here’s exactly what that means and how to find every Expeditioner in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
What Does Find an Expeditioner Mean in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
Whenever you see “Find an Expeditioner” in a merchant’s menu, that’s because the specific items hidden behind that screen are for a party member who hasn’t joined you yet. All gear, exclusive and cosmetics are unique to each character, so there’s no use for you getting something you can’t use on any of your party members, and this system keeps players from accidentally getting something they don’t need yet.
This block will disappear as soon as that character joins the party, so you won’t have to do anything beyond just progressing the story. It’s impossible to miss party members joining you, so whenever you see the prompt to find an expeditioner, simply ignore it and come back later.

When is Every Expeditioner Unlocked in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
Aside from Gustave, who is the main character you play as right away, there are five additional party members to recruit as you play the game. While most of them are obtained in Act 1, the final party member joins shortly into Act 2. After Monoco joins the party, you’ll never see the Find an Expeditioner again, and you’ll have the freedom to purchase any item from any merchant as long as you have the money. Here are the areas each party member joins you in:
- Spring Meadows – Lune
- Flying Waters – Maelle
- Gestral Village – Sciel
- Stone Wave Cliff (immediately after) – Verso
- Monoco’s Station – Monoco
It can be worthwhile to purchase every weapon you can, even early into the game. Enemies have elemental weaknesses, and sometimes it’s better to give everyone in your party a weapon that hits an elemental weakness than just deals the most damage.
