GTA 5 on PC Gets Surprise New Upgrade

Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced now supports DLSS 4 on PC. The surprise upgrade was introduced as part of the latest GTA 5 patch.

GTA 5 Enhanced—also known as GTA 5: Expanded and Enhanced—is a remastered version of Rockstar’s hit game that was originally released for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in March 2022. Its PC port materialized three years later, debuting back in March 2025. With its arrival, the PC version of GTA 5 received ray tracing support, faster loading times, and improved audio, among other technical benefits.

GTA 5 Enhanced Gets DLSS 4 Support on PC

While Rockstar did not commit to delivering any more major technical upgrades, one such offering just arrived with the latest GTA 5 update, which introduced support for NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 technology to the PC remaster on August 14. The new feature is available in both the single-player portion of the game and GTA Online.

How Does DLSS 4 Compare To GTA 5 Enhanced’s Old DLSS 3 Tech?

The PC version of GTA 5 Enhanced shipped with DLSS 3 support back in March 2025. While the older tech also allows for upscaling and AI-powered frame generation, it does so less effectively. DLSS 3, launched with the RTX 40 series of GPUs, is capable of generating one artificial frame between real, rendered frames. Conversely, DLSS 4 can insert three frames at such intervals. More AI-generated frames also means more latency, although this shouldn’t be an issue on cards that support multi-frame generation—those already achieve high native frame rates, which is what ultimately determines latency.

The underlying DLSS 4 model is also more efficient, using up to 30% less video memory. Another difference lies in the neural network architecture serving as the basis for the two technologies: DLSS 3 leverages convolutional neural networks, while DLSS 4 adopts transformer architecture. From a player’s perspective, one big advantage transformers—pioneered by Google researchers in 2017—have over CNNs is that using them for things like upscaling and frame generation results in a cleaner image, particularly when it comes to rendering finer details such as fences, which would often come out blurry with DLSS 3.

DLSS 4 support hence promises to deliver potentially significant improvements to the PC version of GTA 5 Enhanced on supported hardware. That said, the list of GPUs capable of handling the tech is short. Though DLSS 4 upscaling does work on cards as old as the RTX 20 series, multi-frame generation requires a member of the 2025 RTX 50 lineup. As per usual, GTA 5 Enhanced players may want to tinker with the game’s settings in order to get the best results following the new patch. Owners of the original GTA 5 PC port can upgrade to its Enhanced remaster free of charge.
