A reputable insider has alleged that Sony is planning to broadcast a PlayStation State of Play livestream next month. This would mark the fifth State of Play for 2025, and judging by prior patterns, it’d likely give PlayStation an idea of what the gaming giant has lined up for the coming year.
So far in 2025, Sony has held two general State of Play livestreams that announced numerous games and provided updates on existing titles for PS4, PS5, and PC. Additionally, there was a dedicated State of Play broadcast for Borderlands 4 at the tail-end of April, and one for Ghost of Yotei in mid-July. With just over four months left until 2025 draws to a close, many PlayStation fans expect Sony to hold another livestream to announce the PS5 games lineup for 2026 – and perhaps beyond.
Sony Reportedly Planning State of Play or PlayStation Showcase for Next Month
It seems that’s the plan, as in the latest Game Mess Mornings podcast episode, credible industry insider Jeff Grubb felt “comfortable” sharing that Sony plans to hold a State of Play or PlayStation Showcase livestream around the end of September. Grubb accurately predicted several State of Play presentations in the past, so his information does carry weight. Lending further credence to this rumor is the fact that Sony has held September State of Play broadcasts for the past few years to preview first-party and third-party games launching over the coming months, so there’s an established precedent here too.
Going by Grubb’s stipulated end-of-September timeline and the fact that State of Play livestreams are announced on either a Tuesday or Wednesday, the next PlayStation broadcast may be announced on September 23 or 24, with an air date of September 25. It’s also worth noting that Grubb mentioned this livestream may be a PlayStation Showcase instead of a State of Play, with the former being a larger-scale event that would feature major announcements from multiple first-party studios. The last PlayStation Showcase was held in May 2023, but interestingly, the one before that was broadcast in September 2021.
It remains to be seen if the scope of the next PlayStation livestream is big enough for Sony to brand it a Showcase, but speculation and rumors suggest the gaming giant may have a lot of first-party games to feature at the event. Most notably, Ghost of Yotei will likely receive a final marketing beat here ahead of its October 2 launch. Additional contenders for the September 2025 State of Play (or PlayStation Showcase) include Saros‘ promised gameplay trailer, a new trailer for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the rumored 2.5D God of War game, and long-awaited updates on Fairgames and Wolverine.
