Dragon Ball Super: Broly Steelbook Blu-Ray Edition Is Up For Preorder

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is getting a new collectible Blu-ray on November 4. Priced at $40, Dragon Ball Super: Broly is available to preorder now at Amazon and Crunchyroll. The 2018 anime film was the first Dragon Ball Super movie. Notably, series creator Akira Toriyama penned the screenplay and supervised the production of the well-received reimagining of Broly’s story from the trio of mid-’90s movies in the original film series.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the second film in the modern Dragon Ball movie franchise with a Steelbook Edition. Fans can also get Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’s Steelbook Edition for $33.49. Unlike Broly, Super Hero is a 4K and 1080p Blu-ray combo pack.

The new cover features a mix of new and old assets. On the front, you have a profile shot of Gogeta–the fusion of Goku and Vegeta–in his Super Saiyan Blue form, while the rear features the original promotional artwork of the movie and its primary cast; Goku, Vegeta, and Broly.

This is a standard 1080p Blu-ray version of the movie, and for audio, you can watch it in either English or Japanese Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound. The film also has over 45 minutes of extras, with interviews, mini documentaries, and even an Ask Me Anything session with Dragon Ball’s seasoned cast responding to fan questions.

First released in 2018, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, brought a fan-favorite character into the main timeline of the franchise. While Broly made a memorable appearance in his 1993 feature film debut and two 1994 movies–collected as the Broly Triple Feature on Blu-ray–these were essentially non-canon appearances.

The modern film integrated him into Dragon Ball properly, and surprisingly, it also helped evolve him into a sympathetic figure who had a tragic backstory. The movie also added Gogeta to official Dragon Ball continuity, and on a technical level, the action-packed animation is stunning.

Broly is part of Dragon Ball’s modern film series that kicked off in 2013 with Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. A second Dragon Ball Z film, Resurrection F, released in 2015 before the switch to Dragon Ball Super happened with Broly. The most recent entry in the series is Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The 2022 film is the only Dragon Ball movie with a 4K Blu-ray edition. As mentioned, Super Hero also has a 4K Steelbook Edition, so you can display it next to the new edition of Broly. A standard edition of Dragon Ball Super: Broly is also available for $26, in case you don’t care about steelbooks.

Dragon Ball Z and Super Modern Animated Movies

    Dragon Ball Z Original Movies

Battle of Gods brought Dragon Ball’s animated film franchise back to theaters for the first time since 1996. The modern revival only has four animated films in 12 years, but the original decade-long run included a staggering 17 Dragon Ball films. Thankfully, all of the movies from the 1986-1996 original collection are available in physical format. The 13 Dragon Ball Z movies released from 1989-1995 are available as remastered Blu-ray Double Features, with the exception of Broly movies, which are collected as a Triple Feature.

The classic Dragon Ball Z movies are also available across three budget-friendly DVD box sets, each of which is on sale for arounde $19 at Amazon.

To complete the series, you’ll need to pick up Dragon Ball’s 4-Movie Collection on DVD. This box set has the original three Dragon Ball movies from the ’80s and the final entry in the classic film series, 1996’s The Path to Power.

If you don’t own Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Super series on Blu-ray, complete box sets for both are on sale for great prices at Amazon. The Amazon-exclusive Dragon Ball Z: Complete Series Blu-ray box set is on sale for only $119. This massive collection contains all 291 episodes from the series nine-season arc across 36 Blu-ray discs. Fans can also pick up Dragon Ball Super: The Complete Series on Blu-ray for $130 (was $200). This collectible box set includes 20 Blu-ray discs, 10 steelbook cases, and a premium metal display box with slots for each steelbook. You’ll get all 131 episodes of Dragon Ball Super’s TV series.

The Dragon Ball Z collection offers every episode in 1080p resolution with English and Japanese audio tracks, and the Dragon Ball Super set’s audio options include English with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround Sound or in the original Japanese with Dolby TrueHD 2.0 audio and English subtitles. You’re also getting several bonus features here, like textless opening/closing songs, interviews, expo panels, and several more featurettes.

    $46 (was $70)

Sandwiched between these two series is Dragon Ball GT, the original sequel series to Dragon Ball Z. While it wasn’t as well-received as Dragon Ball Z after it debuted, the show has been reevaluated in recent years and has received a more positive reception since then.

While the show isn’t available on Blu-ray, you can grab the entire box set on DVD for $46 (was $70). This is a 10-disc set that contains all 64 episodes and the Dragon Ball GT feature film in 480p, English with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround Sound, and the original Japanese mono broadcast version in stereo with English subtitles.

The $46 box set is the repackaged edition that released in 2023. Amazon also has the original 2010 box set for $56. The content is the same across both box sets.
