In a recent interview, Sandfall Interactive’s Guillaume Broche hinted at the possibility of a sequel to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, confirming that the game only marks the beginning of the franchise. Released in April, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 proved itself an ambitious turn-based RPG that turned the genre on its head, earning millions of fans around the world and establishing itself as one of the best games of 2025.
Much of the game’s success can be attributed to Sandfall Interactive’s unique approach to combat design. Instead of relying on a rote rock-paper-scissors style popular in most turn-based games, Expedition 33 made liberal use of real-time parrying and dodging to transform even the most mundane encounters into nail-biters. That, combined with a masterclass in visual presentation, ensured Sandfall’s debut title became an instant hit among players. Sales were soon to follow as Expedition 33 managed to sell 3.3 million copies in 33 days, a commercial milestone that felt almost destined.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Sequel Details
In an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Sandfall Interactive CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche was asked if he could share concrete plans for an Expedition 33 sequel. “Clair Obscur is a franchise name,” Broche explained, “and Expedition 33 is only one of the stories we want to tell in this franchise.” Although he did not specify a timeline, release window, or even the nature of the sequel, he did confirm that “this is not the end of Clair Obscur,” adding that it is still too early to reveal exactly what the next installment will look like.
Broche also let slip that he is already “trying to write the sequel,” meaning the next installment in the Clair Obscur franchise may arrive sooner than anticipated. He also mentioned that he is attempting to “ignore Expedition 33” during the writing process, as he wants a singular, authentic vision that’s not influenced or compromised by other stories. After condensing his years of experience and love of gaming into Expedition 33, however, Broche stated that he is finding it tough to find a “new place of joy and sincerity” to write a story from.
When asked about whether Sandfall would be expanding the Expedition 33 team in order to make the sequel bigger and better, Broche replied negatively. According to him, with tools like Unreal Engine 5 at developers’ disposal, it’s possible to remain “small and agile” and still compete with AAA studios. He further clarified that, in his opinion, bigger is not always better, as games with 30 hours of replayable content are much more digestible than 200-hour RPGs that no one has time to finish in this day and age.
On the topic of pricing, Broche explained that the reason Expedition 33 was priced at $50 instead of $60 or $70, like many were expecting, was because of the game’s surprisingly low development costs, which were on the “lower end of AA games.” Considering the studio has no plans to expand anytime soon, this trend may very well continue for the potential sequel as well.
