Lost Soul Aside feels like an old-school PS2/PS3 hack-and-slash game, and whether that’s for better or for worse depends on each player’s personal taste. However, this is still a modern video game and, like most action-adventure titles released nowadays, it has a pretty large but conventional skill tree that improves the gameplay as the player unlocks more and more skills.
Throughout this adventure, the main character, Kaser, can obtain Voidrax Crystal Shards and use them on his skill trees to boost his strength, learn useful new techniques, amplify his inventory, etc. With four different skill trees (one for each weapon type) and over 140 skills to choose from, newcomers to Lost Soul Aside may find themselves overwhelmed. Nevertheless, they should definitely prioritize the following eight and unlock them as soon as possible if they want to get the most out of this game’s excellent combat.
Potion Pouch Expansion
Kaser Can Carry More Healing Potions
Healing Potions are the main healing item of Lost Soul Aside. Kaser can only carry five of them at the beginning of the game, and if the player wants to restock them, they can either find more in random treasure chests or talk to Liana. However, there’s a problem: treasure chests appear in the overworld very sparingly, and Liana can take a long time to spawn in some of the longer levels.
Players who want to carry as many healing potions as possible should try to unlock the skill known as Potion Pouch Expansion as soon as possible. Of course, this skill only increases the number of Healing Potions by one, but each weapon type has at least Potion Pouch Expansion in their respective skill trees, meaning that Kaser can end up carrying at least ten Healing Potions at the same time after they’re all unlocked.
Arena Power Slot / Trinket Slot
Equip Kaser with More Arena Powers and More Trinkets
Something that can be quite frustrating about the first few hours of Lost Soul Aside’s campaign is the fact that Kaser can only be equipped with one trinket (a wearable items that give him additional properties) and one Arena Power (special powers that have special effects in battle) at a time.
This can be somewhat limiting, since it only allows the player to play around with just one trinket and one Arena Power. The key to this, however, is in the skill tree: similarly to Potion Pouch Expansion, each weapon type’s skill tree has at least one Trinket Slot and one Arena Power Slot, which will increase the number of trinkets and Arena Powers Kaser can equip himself with, respectively. Arena Power Slot is the better of the two, because fighting enemies while being able to wield three of these special abilities at the same time is really fun and satisfying.
Heavy Cleave / Shadow Rend
Turn Kaser into Vergil from Devil May Cry
The sword is the game’s starting weapon and the one that Kaser will wield for most of the story. Naturally, this means that it has a variety of different skills that the player can unlock very early on and play around with, with Heavy Cleave and Shadow Rend being two of the best ones.
Heavy Clave allows the player to hold the heavy attack button and unleash a powerful slash attack that quickly bridges the distance between Kaser and the enemy. Shadow Rend, on the other hand, is its natural evolution, as it allows the player to hold the same button for a few more seconds and unleash a flurry of rapid sword slashes on enemies, in an attack that is very reminiscent of Vergil’s Judgement Cut from the Devil May Cry series.
Players should also unlock Burst Pursuit: Shadow Flash and Burst Pursuit: Obliteration to make these two attacks even stronger and longer.
Eagle Strike
Return to the Ground After a Lengthy Aerial Combo
Like most conventional hack-and-slash games, aerial combos are a key part of Lost Soul Aside’s combat system, with the sword having some of the best ones in the game. If the player presses the heavy attack many times while Kaser is in the air, they’ll unleash a flurry of powerful slashes on enemies that can’t move while they’re airborne.
That’s why they should try to unlock the Eagle Strike skill as soon as possible, as it’ll make Kaser go back to the ground quickly just by pressing the heavy attack button an additional time. Going from an aerial combo to a ground combo in this game can feel somewhat clunky, so Eagle Strike gets rid of that issue completely by making the transition quicker, smoother, and more seamless.
Spinning Thrust
Turns One of the Greatsword’s Worst Attacks into One of Its Best
Around ¼ into the main story, Kaser will obtain his second weapon type: the Greatsword. Naturally, it has slower but stronger combos that pack a big punch, but its main heavy attack, known as Earth Sever, can be particularly underwhelming. It’s just a basic charged attack that makes Kaser unable to move until it’s completed, meaning that it completely breaks the flow of the combat.
Because of this, it is highly recommended that players unlock the Spinning Thrust skill as soon as they can. This ability allows them to follow Earth Sever with a swift combo of whirling slashes that are also surprisingly speedy for such a heavy weapon. Furthermore (and similarly to Heavy Cleave), this attack can be further strengthened by unlocking its Burst Pursuit skill, which is called Waterspout.
Enhanced Poleblade
Shoot Even More Projectiles with One Single Move
The Poleblade is one of the best weapon types in Lost Soul Aside, as not only is it quick and strong, but it also allows Kaser to shoot projectiles at enemies from a distance, which can be a major game-changer in certain situations. By pressing the heavy attack button while he’s on the ground, players can launch many phantom poleblades in quick succession.
This is good and all, of course, but the basic version of this attack can feel very weak at times. That’s precisely why players should unlock its superior version, Enhanced Poleblade, as soon as they can, because it’ll allow Kaser to shoot even more projectiles by simply pressing the heavy attack button one more time. With this skill, the Poleblade becomes a true force to be reckoned with, and it can get even stronger by unlocking its own Burst Pursuit: Air Blast.
Spinning Strike / Whirling Strike
Lose Stamina to Break Shields Faster
Stamina is a fundamental part of Lost Soul Aside’s combat, as Kaser’s dodge mechanic depends entirely on his Stamina bar. Because of this, it’s not usually recommended for new players to unlock and use any skills that deplete stamina, but there’s one notorious exception.
Spinning Strike is a Poleblade-exclusive skill that turns Kaser into Crash Bandicoot, because it makes him spin around quickly to deal constant damage to enemies, and it’s activated by pressing and holding the light attack button for a few seconds. Needless to say, Whirling Strike is a separate skill that allows him to do the same, but in the air. While these two abilities deplete stamina, they do it so slowly that it takes a while for that to be a real problem, and the risk is definitely worth it because they’re especially useful when trying to break an enemy or a boss’ shield quickly.
Burst Pursuit: Void Array
Turns the Dodge into a Passive Offensive Technique
The scythe is the final weapon type that Kaser unlocks in the game, and it’s definitely the weirder one, since it requires a lot of getting used to. Nevertheless, it does have its fair share of useful abilities that set it apart from the other three weapon types, with Burst Pursuit: Void Array being one of the most distinct in the entire game. Burst Pursuit skills in general have proven to be especially useful, but this one is particularly special because it turns a defensive technique into an offensive one.
By pressing R2/Right Trigger just when Kaser finishes his dodge animation, he can summon and leave three columns of Array behind him. These are basically small projectiles that the player can then choose to detonate by pressing the same button once again. These types of passive offensive abilities are usually reserved for Arena Powers, so the fact that this can be done simply by dodging an attack is both remarkable and practical.
