The release of Helldivers 2‘s Into the Unjust update introduces a variety of new features: challenging new enemies like burrowing Rupture variants, the devious Dragonroach, and the nigh-unkillable Hive Lord; sprawling underground cave networks that prevent calling down stratagems; and of course, new mission types.
The new primary mission objective, Destroy Spore Lung, sends intrepid Helldivers underground to destroy a Terminid Spore Lung. Delving into Terminid caves is a daunting prospect on its own, even with the best weapons to venture underground, and the added stress of carrying a Portable Hellbomb on your back only increases the desperate feeling of the expedition. This guide will touch briefly on what you want to bring with you, as well as what exactly you’ll need to do in order to destroy the Terminid Spore Lung in Helldivers 2.
How to Destroy a Terminid Spore Lung
Terminid Spore Lungs are one of several primary objectives you’ll encounter when dropping onto Gloom-infested planets. This objective tasks you with venturing into Terminid tunnels and deploying a Portable Hellbomb at the site of the Spore Lung itself.
On missions with this primary objective, the Portable Hellbomb backpack Stratagem will be a free stratagem for the mission.
Before venturing into the caves, make sure you’re fully stocked with ammo and any gear you want to bring with you (more on gear choice in the next section). When you and your squad are ready, head into the caves. Be prepared for stiff resistance as you push further into the Terminid tunnels. You will encounter multiple bug holes down here, including the potential for Bile Titan Nests (which can be extra challenging when deprived of deployable Orbital or Eagle Stratagems). Destroy bug holes along the way, but as you go, make sure you are following the fleshy, orange tubes along the ceiling (shown in the image below). These are attached to the Spore Lung, so they act as your trail marker to the source.
Once you reach the terminus of these fleshy, orange tubes, you’ll find a large glowing mass attached to the ceiling into which all the tubes are feeding. This is the Terminid Spore Lung. To destroy it, you’ll want to activate the Portable Hellbomb directly beneath it. Once activated, unequip it and run out of there (or remain beneath it, emoting democratically in the face of annihilation). Even if you die at the Spore Lung, as long as you activated the Portable Hellbomb, you should be treated to an ‘Objective Completed’ alert.
One Portable Hellbomb should destroy the Spore Lung, though it will occasionally survive if the Portable Hellbomb isn’t placed in the exact right spot.
If the Spore Lung survives, you can return to the surface to call down another Portable Hellbomb to finish the job. Alternatively, the Spore Lung can be destroyed by overwhelming explosive damage, though it’s rarely optimal. For example, it can be destroyed by about 10–12 shots from a Recoilless Rifle or Quasar Cannon. If the first Portable Hellbomb doesn’t finish the job, but you have access to some other explosive options like Thermite, the Ultimatum (secondary), or Quasar Cannon, you can potentially destroy it with just a few more shots.
Best Weapons and Stratagems to Reach the Spore Lung
So, what you need to do is simple, but what’s the best way to get it done? Without delving too deeply into squad loadouts, there are a few choice gear options that can help you on this mission. The big one is the Emancipator Exosuit. For those struggling to delve too deeply into the Terminid tunnels without getting overwhelmed, try bringing along a mech (or two). You can stomp most lesser bugs, close bug holes with its four Autocannons, and remain relatively safe on the journey to the Spore Lung. You’re very likely to run out of ammo along the way, but it can act as a powerful stake to drive deep into the heart of the Terminid caves.
To compensate for the chance of one Portable Hellbomb not fully doing the trick, you can also bring along an Ultimatum, Quasar Cannon, and some Thermite to finish the job.
As far as helpful gear for the squad as a whole on this mission, there are several great options.
- Primary: Cookout, Blitzer, Liberator Penetrator
- Secondary: Ultimatum (especially critical if you come across a Bile Titan Nest along the way)
- Grenade: Gas, Stun, Thermite
- Stratagems: AX/TX-13 “Guard Dog” Dog Breath, Supply Pack, Machine Gun, Heavy Machine Gun, Grenade Launcher, Quasar Cannon
