A Pokemon TCG player has gone through an upsetting experience after getting pulled aside by airport security and questioned for carrying the cards in their bag. The disconcerting experience certainly wasn’t fun for the fan, and it serves as a warning to collectors of Pokemon TCG and other card games when going to the airport.
Airport security uses x-rays and other types of scanners to look at what passengers are bringing with them, for the sake of safety. Typically, this is a fairly smooth experience for passengers, but sometimes certain items can lead to security taking a more serious look at what’s going on. In one instance, a Call of Duty fan got in trouble at an airport for bringing a replica of the Monkey Bomb with them, resulting in it being confiscated. However, this Pokemon TCG incident is a lot more unexpected.
Pokemon TCG Packs Get Airport Passenger Questioned by Security
On Reddit, a Pokemon TCG fan shared a plight with fellow collectors and players, explaining that they had brought some Pokemon TCG boxes with them to give to family members. A shared photo shows they had packed Pokemon TCG Temporal Forces boxes. When the cards went through the scanner, a security agent asked the fan to open the boxes, which they did. However, things just got worse from there, as airport security swabbed down the fan and then claimed that they had “found explosives” and questioned them for about 30 minutes.
After numerous questions and looking through the fan’s belongings, they released them, allowing them to get to their flight. However, it’s easy to see how this would be a nerve-racking situation. The fan expressed confusion at why the cards triggered a security check, as they’d gone through security before and hadn’t had any issues. Another aviation security officer in the comments explained that packs of cards like these can look like a mass of “organic matter” that looks similar to explosives on the scanner. The card packs tend to be so dense that one Pokemon TCG deck even saved a fan’s life from a stray bullet. The swab, which they seemed to believe had picked up traces of explosives, can yield a false positive for a number of reasons.
For fellow Pokemon fans who plan on bringing cards through security, the best course of action would be to open the boxes, and if possible, the packs, before doing so. While nothing beyond an inconvenience and a slight scare happened with this passenger, if nothing else, getting falsely flagged or even having Pokemon TCG cards seized isn’t something any fan wants to go through, and could lead to delays, making it harder to get to one’s gate on time.
