This list contains spoilers for the One Piece anime
In the wonderful world of One Piece, a Devil Fruit will usually feed into the host’s personality or fighting style, but this doesn’t technically always need to be the case. Though it’s quite rare, there have been several characters seen throughout the One Piece story who have somehow obtained Devil Fruits that don’t exactly suit them all that well for one reason or another, and while every Marine and pirate would be more than happy to have a powerful fruit that gives them an edge in battle, there’s definitely some who probably have preferred something a little different from what life gave them.
Whether it’s because they’re a little too bizarre and weird, they are far too dangerous to use in battle, or simply because they’re more or less useless, there are many reasons why a One Piece character might feel like an odd pairing with a particular Devil Fruit ability. This especially applies to the individuals listed below who, despite being pretty powerful, seem like they really ought to have gotten a different Devil Fruit when taking into account who they actually are as people.

Kin’emon
Devil Fruit: Garb Garb Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia
At first glance, it would be easy to assume that the legendary samurai known as Kin’emon would possess a Devil Fruit that allows him to increase his strength or durability in combat. This is why so many fans were surprised to learn that he actually ended up with one of the strangest fruits in the series, as it allows him to create a brand-new set of clothes not just for him, but for his allies too, in the blink of an eye. Though this technique has proven very useful on several occasions, especially when it allowed the Straw Hats to infiltrate Onigashima, it would definitely feel more appropriate for a stylist or fashion enthusiast rather than Kin’emon.
For a good chunk of the story, all Kine’mon wanted to do is liberate his home country of Wano from the clutches of Kaido and a Orochi, so considering his Devil Fruit has virtually nothing to do with him or his personality, he initially didn’t view it as all that useful for achieving his mission. Once he ran into the Straw Hats though, he finally found a few opportunities to put the ability to good use, even though it would clearly be a much better fit for someone whose job or personality revolved around the fashion industry.

Fujitora
Devil Fruit: Press Press Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia
Compared to the other Marine Admirals, Fujitora is seen as being the most honorable and respectable of the bunch. While he’s still dead-set on hunting down pirates, considering he is a Marine after all, he’s not someone who will mercilessly kill an entire swarm of them just for the sake of it; though this is something he’s easily able to do thanks to his Devil Fruit. By controlling gravity itself, Fujitora is capable of obliterating an entire area in mere seconds by hurling down objects from the sky to destroy everything and everyone in sight.
A clear example of this can be seen in the One Piece Stampede movie where Fujitora decides to call down a fiery meteorite which almost flattens the entire area before Zoro slices it into. While it makes sense that Fujitora would have a strong Devil Fruit to back up his status as an Admiral, the Press Press fruit does feel a bit too destructive and chaotic for someone as sensible as its current owner.

X Drake
Devil Fruit: Dragon Dragon Fruit, Model: Allosaurus
X Drake is a member of the Worst Generation of pirates whose true identity is shrouded in mystery for much of the story, but during the Wano arc, it’s revealed that he’s secretly been a part of an undercover Marine group known as SWORD the entire time. Because of this, Drake needed to keep a low profile to avoid attracting any unwanted attention, since he essentially is in the middle a secret espionage mission any time he shows up in the story, but this isn’t something that his Devil Fruit compliments all that well.
When activating fruit ability, Drake can turn into a ferocious Allosaurus who will immediately draw the eyes of everyone around him due to his impressive size and distinct appearance. This is probably why Drake only shows off his full Zoan form a handful of times in the series, considering he is supposed to be avoiding the spotlight rather than hogging it all for himself.

Pekoms
Devil Fruit: Turtle Turtle Fruit
There’s no shortage of weird and bizarre Devil Fruits that have popped up throughout One Piece, but the Turtle Turtle fruit, owned by Pekoms, is definitely one of the strangest ones shown so far. As the name implies, the fruit enables Pekoms, who is already animalistic due to being a Mink, to grow a shell on his back, just like a turtle. He uses this quite often to avoid being backstabbed and attacked from behind by his myriad of enemies, but the fruit itself doesn’t seem like a perfect match for someone who is supposed to be one of Big Mom’s most loyal advisors.
Ideally, Pekoms would have a fruit that either enables him to retrieve data and information to relay back to Big Mom, or that will give him an advantage in combat to fend off any trespasses on Whole Cake Island. In stark contrast, he possesses a selfish ability which really only benefits him and no one else, so it definitely seems a bit random why this was the Devil Fruit Oda chose to give the lovable Mink when he created him.

Katakuri
Devil Fruit: Mochi Mochi Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Special Paramecia
Most of Big Mom’s children are happy-go-lucky pirates whose food-based abilities fit them like a glove, but Katakuri is the exception. This dangerous Sweet Commander is as serious and stoic as they come, so having a Devil Fruit which allows him to control and manipulate soft and fluffy mochi probably isn’t what most fans thought he would have under his sleeve when they first laid eyes on him.
Despite this being a pretty weird pairing, Katakuri has actually been able to make full use of his Devil Fruit to become an absurdly powerful pirate, to the point where he has even been able to Awaken the ability, which proved extremely difficult for Luffy to deal with. Katakuri himself probably would have liked to have been given a fruit which was a little more his style, but within the main story, it’s been made clear that the punk pirate has embraced and accepted his mochi fruit as a power that he can utilize in battle.
2
Vander Decken
Devil Fruit: Mark Mark Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia
When it comes to characters who completely waste their Devil Fruit abilities, Vander Decken is near the top of the list. Thanks to the Mark Mark Fruit, Vander Decken is capable of throwing out any projectile of his choosing which will then follow anyone who has already been marked, no matter where they might be hiding. While this would be incredibly handy for a marine to have in tracking down a specific pirate, Vander Decken prefers to use it to try and murder Princess Shirahoshi, all because she rejected his advances.
This ability feels like it belongs to someone much stronger and more responsible than Vander Decken, since he clearly isn’t using it to its full potential. As a temporary member of Hody’s crew, Vander Decken should have a fruit which enables him to become stronger in close-quarter combat, especially considering his weapons of choice are machetes and knives, so having one of the best long ranged abilities in the series just doesn’t make all that much sense.
1
Foxy
Devil Fruit: Slow Slow Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia
The biggest reason why Foxy seems like such an odd pick as the character to acquire the Slow Slow Fruit is because the fruit in question is absurdly powerful, unlike its user. Having the ability to slow an enemy down to a crawl is something any Marine or pirate would be eager to acquire for themselves, so the fact it ended up being eaten by a low-class thug who simply uses it to play silly games definitely feels a little weird.
Not only that, but Foxy is also pretty bad at actually using the fruit, as shown when Luffy was able to reflect the ability back to him just by using a mirror. It wouldn’t seem all that out of place if Foxy was revealed to have a Devil Fruit which was more goofy or playful, but having an incredibly strong ability like this one just doesn’t suit someone as weak and forgettable as the captain of the Foxy Pirates.
