After you defeat the Bell Beast in Silksong, players who continue to the right of the boss arena will eventually run into a building that Hornet can enter. This building, on the far top right of The Marrow zone, is home to Grindle, a prisoner who asks Hornet to break him out of jail.
Grindle says he has been imprisoned for “a little light thievery”, and it’s up to you to decide whether to free the prisoner in Silksong or leave him in his cell. This guide details what happens if you free the prisoner in Silksong and explains why you might want to break Grindle out of his cell – and why you might want to wait until the community has more information.
What Happens If You Free The Prisoner?
There are a handful of known consequences for freeing the prisoner in Silksong, but most of them seem to be positive. Though he was imprisoned for life for “a little light thievery” (according to his own words), if you free Grindle, you’ll get a handy Tool and turn him into a unique vendor.
-
The Straight Pin is a Tool that Hornet can equip that allows her to launch a small projectile forward, dealing her normal damage to enemies hit.
- Go into Grindle’s cell and jump into the cell above to find this on the ground.
-
If you let him free and exhaust his dialogue, then leave and return to the area, Grindle will become a kind of vendor. Instead of accepting your Rosaries for goods, though, Grindle will offer secrets and information.
- At first, this costs 10 Rosaries, but every time you buy a secret, the price goes up.
You must leave the prison, sit on a bench, then return to the prison to trigger Grindle to move out of his cell and offer his information services. Resting at a bench updates your Map, resets enemy positions and progresses the world state, for example, if you have met the requirements to make an NPC move to another location.
Should You Free Grindle In Silksong?
Because of the lack of information about the Grindle’s development in the late game, it would appear that there is nothing wrong with helping the prisoner in Silksong. You get access to a useful offensive Tool and the ability to purchase hints about future areas, bosses, and other information about your journey.
These are both useful for Hornet, so unless the community discovers some nefarious result of this decision, it would appear that players should break the prisoner out of jail.
In the early game, these are the only consequences for freeing the prisoner in the Marrow. If he betrays Hornet or other consequences arise because you chose to free Grindle, this guide will be updated with relevant information to help players decide whether to trust the prisoner or not.
