This list contains spoilers for the One Piece manga
The Five Elders, also commonly known as the Gorosei, are some of the most powerful and influential individuals in all of One Piece. Only a handful of characters have ever had the opportunity to meet these vicious rulers in person, so it’s always a huge surprise when someone is able to sit down with them, even just for a quick chat, but this is something Shanks was able to achieve back during the Reverie. At the time, many fans were understandably puzzled as to how exactly such a powerful Yonko could partake in a casual discussion with members of the World Government, but thanks to the recent manga chapters, the reasoning for this meeting taking place is starting to become a lot clearer.
Shanks has been a central focus recently in the One Piece manga, with fans learning a lot more not only about his upbringing, but also his parentage. These sudden reveals have helped to piece together Shanks’ wider influence on the world, especially as it relates to the Gorosei, who seemed more than happy to talk to the Red-Hair pirate captain hundreds of chapters and episodes ago.
Shanks’ Birthplace Is Revealed
The Legendary Pirate Was Born On A Very Special Island
- Shanks was born not long before the God Valley Incident
- It’s implied Roget took him away amidst all the fighting
- He could have followed in the footsteps of his brother
In chapter 1158 of the One Piece manga, Oda finally reveals the birthplace of not only Shanks, but also his brother, Shamrock, and it turns out to be none other than God Valley. Though the God Valley incident, which involved Roger and Garp teaming up to take down the Rocks Pirates, has been shown in flashes here and there, it seems as though the story will be showing the battle in full very soon, but while everyone is aware of the combatants, nobody expected Shanks to actually be born on that exact island at roughly the same time.
“Without their father around, we’ll have to help with that” – God Valley resident to Shanks and Shamrock’s mother
What’s important to focus on is the fact that Shanks was born on the island 39 years ago, meaning he still would have been only a baby when the chaotic fight between Rocks and his opponents officially kicked off. Therefore, many fans suspect that this is probably how a young Shanks ended up on Roger’s crew in the first place, since it seems highly likely that the future Pirate King wanted to protect the boy who he found tucked away in a treasure chest.
When taking into account that Shamrock would go on to become a loyal servant to Imu and the World Government, it seems as though Oda is indicating that this path was also meant for Shanks, until he was swooped up by the legendary pirate who took him under his wing. This would start to explain why the Gorosei seemed a lot more accepting of meeting with Shanks than any other pirate, considering traveling down the road of piracy potentially wasn’t his choice to begin with, but there’s another reason why the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates was able to strike up this meeting.
Shanks’ Father Is Highly Influential
Garland Is Now A Member Of The Five Elders After Saturn Was Killed
- His prestigious position reflects on his son
- Harming Shanks wouldn’t be a wise idea by the Gorosei
- Shanks’ status as a member of the Garling family earns him a spot in Mary Geoise
It wasn’t long ago that fans were first introduced to a dangerous group of agents known only as the Holy Knights, but the one who was leading this group for most of his life was actually Shanks’ own father, Figarland Garling. Despite being a parent to one of the most influential pirates in the entire world, Garling has remained a loyal asset to Imu and the World Government at large, to the point where he was even chosen to become one of the Five Elders after Saturn was killed due to his failures on Egghead.
When acknowledging how high up the social ladder Garling actually is, it’s safe to assume that bringing any harm to his son could end up putting a wedge between him and the other Elders. On the other hand, considering how prestigious the Garling family actually is among the World Nobles, it means even if Shanks is a pirate, he would still technically be deserving of entering Mary Geois due to his status alone.
It’s important to remember that the Marines and World Government aren’t against interacting with characters just because they are pirates, as was seen when they decided to take control of the Warlords of the Sea. Shanks might not be a Warlord, but his father is a highly influential member of the World Government, so by default, it means he too needs to be treated with some amount of respect by his elders.
Shamrock Has Earned The Government’s Trust
Maybe The Gorosei Sees The Same Potential In His Brother
As if revealing one of Shanks’s family members wasn’t already big enough of a surprise, during the Elbaph arc, Oda also revealed Shanks’ older brother, Shamrock, who is currently working as a Holy Knight. These absurdly powerful individuals work directly under Imu, meaning many Marines aren’t even aware of their existence, considering they tend to work in the shadows when dealing with a significant threat.
“I’m sick of all these useless people. I’d hoped we could have settled this much more cleanly” – Shamrock
As was revealed in chapter 1158, Shamrock, along with Shanks, was born on God Valley, though unlike his brother, he decided to follow the path of his father to become someone that the World Government could rely on. Shamrock has proven his utmost loyalty to Imu and the Five Elders, and though Shanks is seen as the more rebellious of the two, it’s implied that maybe the Gorosei thought they could also influence Shanks to join the rest of his family in becoming a tool for Imu and his evil schemes.
The full conversation between Shanks and the Gorosei was never fully revealed, so fans will have to wait and see whether the Elders were desperate to try and get shanks on their side during the discussion. Regardless of what was actually spoken about though, it’s become evident that Shanks’ relatives, along with his prestigious status, went a long way in giving him the green light to talk with the Gorosei directly; something most pirates would never be lucky enough to achieve in their lifetime.
