In a recent TikTok video, a couple attempted to buy a PlayStation 5 through DoorDash, but didn’t realize that they couldn’t play Mario Kart on the console. Sony’s PlayStation 5 is nearly five years old at this point, and it is home to all kinds of exciting gaming experiences. From blockbuster first-party PlayStation games to major third-party multi-platform releases, there are games of all genres to play on the PS5. But while the PS5 is capable of playing many games, Mario Kart is not one of them.
Ever since cross-platform play was introduced, the boundary between consoles has been growing thinner. Xbox has taken the boldest steps toward ending console exclusivity, bringing some of its major releases to PlayStation 5 and other platforms. While Sony hasn’t gone nearly as far as Microsoft, it has announced plans to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox, and there are job listings that suggest more PlayStation games could be jumping ship in the future. Nintendo, however, has held tight to its console exclusives, and has made no indication that it plans on bringing its games to other consoles.

From JRPGs to platform, racing, and fighting titles, here are all the major new PS5 games set to release in 2025 and later.
People that are not in the gaming bubble may not even realize that there are some games that are exclusive to certain platforms. TikToker Gail and her fiance recently found this out the hard way after they ordered a PlayStation 5 through DoorDash, hoping to use it to play Mario Kart. After getting the console set up, they searched for Mario in the PlayStation Store only to discover that no Mario games exist on the platform. The description of the video included the disclaimer that the two of them aren’t gamers. “Let’s just say, he is not happy!!”
Unless Nintendo one day decides that it is no longer interested in the hardware business, it’s highly unlikely that it will ever bring its exclusive games to other platforms in the way PlayStation and Xbox have. This means anyone wanting to play Mario Kart will need to either play Mario Kart Tour on mobile or buy a Nintendo console to enjoy the main series games. Those that want to play the most Mario Kart games on one platform will definitely want to consider getting a Nintendo Switch 2, as it has multiple main series entries available and the potential to get more over time.
List of Mario Kart Games You Can Play on the Switch 2
- Super Mario Kart
- Mario Kart 64
- Mario Kart: Super Circuit
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Mario Kart World
Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive game, and thanks to backward compatibility, the home console/handheld hybrid can also play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Through the Nintendo Classics library available as part of Nintendo Switch Online, Switch 2 owners can also play Super Mario Kart, while the Expansion Pack tier has access to Mario Kart 64 and Super Circuit. Mario Kart Tour is a mobile game and is unlikely to ever jump ship to Switch 2, but it’s possible Mario Kart: Double Dash will be added to the GameCube games available on the Expansion Pack tier at some point down the road. Mario Kart Wii, DS, and Mario Kart 7 are trickier, but Nintendo does like to port classic games to newer consoles, and so the potential is always there for them to make a Switch 2 comeback down the road.
