Marvel Rivals Could Have Original Characters In The Future

Marvel Rivals could get original characters in the future, in addition to its roster of comic book heroes.

In an interview with MP1st, Marvel Rivals creative director Guanguang was asked about the appearance of original characters in the MCU movies and television shows and if NetEase could create an original character for Marvel Rivals. Guanguang confirmed that NetEase does have the go-ahead to create original characters, although when asked for additional information, he simply said, “stay tuned.”

Marvel Rivals has a fairly aggressive content release schedule, with a new character being added once a month, every half season. Since releasing in December 2024, eight new characters have been added to the roster, with the most recent addition being Blade. While NetEase plans to release new characters frequently, the Marvel universe has a ton of characters that could be added to the game, with some of the biggest names, like Cyclops, Daredevil, and Green Goblin, still available to be added to the roster.

While it seems unlikely that Marvel Rivals will get an original character anytime soon, NetEase is likely thinking several characters ahead and there is always a possibility that the developer would want to put its own mark on the Marvel universe with an original character. NetEase also recently confirmed that its character release schedule isn’t dependent on the MCU slate of movies and television, so future character releases will follow the in-game storyline and not be forced to share marketing beats.

Marvel Rivals is currently in the midst of Season 3, which saw the release of two new Duelists, Phoenix and Blade.
