Players will need to dive into Mysterious Rifts to face a lot of dinosaur-like creatures, with the help of Skarven Bloodhorn, an NPC that will help them gain new and powerful rewards.
This new gimmick works similarly to the Nemeses, but the danger level scales more and more as players face more dangerous Rift Beasts, and it can end up badly if they try to face them unprepared. So, in this guide, Last Epoch players will learn everything they need to know about Rift Beasts, how to beat them, and what rewards await the strongest hunters.
Where To Find Rift Beasts in Last Epoch
To find Rift Beasts in Last Epoch, players need to find a Mysterious Rift, which is a claw-mark-like icon that appears in the map (similar to Altars, Rune Prisons, and Nemeses). These rifts are portals that lead to a distant past, and by triggering them for the first time, players will begin their first hunt for a Rift Beast in the company of Skarven Bloodhorn, a primal hunter with incredible skills.
The maps inside Mysterious Rifts function as a small dungeon-like instance, and at the end of them awaits a Rift Beast nest, which is the main goal of players each time they enter these time anomalies. Facing a Rift Beast in their nest is a little bit easier than encountering them through other means, since they will have the help of Skarven to take them down.
There are also Torn Rifts that can be used to summon a Rift Beast directly into the Epoch the players are currently at. These rifts appear the same as the Mysterious Rift (both in the Mini-map and when approaching them), but if players pay attention, they will notice the description of the rift is different. Look out and prepare well before facing a Rift Beast, since other enemies will continue to swarm players as they face the monster in their current timeline. As players might have guessed, these dangerous monsters have the potential to cause a lot of harm, so be extra careful when facing them in enclosed spaces.
How To Alter Rift Beast Evolution in Last Epoch
Once players have defeated their first Rift Beast, they will be able to approach their Nest and select one from three options to alter that Beast’s lineage, which will increase their power level, abilities, and also alter the loot they drop. Pretty straightforward, but players need to be careful since there are various currencies these beasts drop, like Ancient Bones and Primordial Fangs, and they are important for collecting new and powerful rewards.
After selecting a Lineage for the next Rift Beast, one of its offspring will escape through a time portal, and the next time players find a Mysterious Rift, they will be able to face a stronger version of the creature they have beaten before. This process will repeat itself every time players enter a Mysterious Rift, but the Rift Beasts summoned by using Torn Rifts do not allow players to alter their Lineage Evolution, they are just extra Beasts they can face to get more parts.
Players should also keep in mind that to collect each of the different parts required to trade for Primordial Items, they will need to pick various evolutions and do a lot of grinding. It’s not easy to manage on the lower levels, but as players progress through Season 3 of Last Epoch, they will be able to get enough materials to collect one of those powerful Legendary Items.
How to Beat Rift Beasts in Last Epoch
Like any Boss Category Monster, Rift Beasts have both durability and a huge damage-sponge health bar. The secret to beat them lies in knowing beforehand what abilities these monsters carry through their Lineage.
For example, let’s say we pick the Magma Head evolutionary trait the first time we beat a Rift Beast, so its descendant, the next Rift Beast we encounter, will have another head with the ability to breathe magma blasts that leave a fire trail when they hit a surface.
The next time we face the Rift Beast in a Mysterious Rift, if we pick the Ice Head trait at the Nest, the Rift Beast will now possess three heads, a normal one that does bite attacks, a magma one that does fire elemental damage in AoE, and a third one that does frost (ice) damage by breathing ice.
Each time players enter a Mysterious Rift in the company of Skarven, beat a Rift Beast, and choose a new evolutionary trait, the monster will become stronger and have a lot of abilities that will make it more fearsome in combat.
Best Way To Farm Rift Beasts in Last Epoch
To farm Rift Beast in Last Epoch, players need to enter any Timeline and go to a map they have already explored, clear out the map, and search for an Altar or Runic Prison. Once players have found them, they can use the Town Portal (T) to travel to the city and reset the instance, and when they return, the area will be refreshed, and there’s a high chance these Altars or Runic Prisons will change into Mysterious or Torn Rifts.
Players will need to be extremely patient with this method, as it doesn’t work perfectly. However, once they get the hang of it, they will be able to repeat it constantly to find more Rift Beasts and farm their materials. Ideally, they should be aiming for Torn Rifts since they allow to face Beasts directly, and it’s the fastest method. But as they gather enough of one material, they will need to look for a Mysterious Rift to corner the Rift Beast and alter its evolution, so that they can collect other materials.
How To Get Primordial Items in Last Epoch
Primordial Items are special Legendary items that have been considerably improved, and these items have the particularity of being exclusive, meaning that players can only equip one at a time. There are two types of Primordial Items in Last Epoch: Unique and Exalted. The first type has Tier 7 Affixes, and the second one has Tier 8 Affixes and can be obtained by using a Rune of Evolution over a Primordial Item.
Players will notice these Affixes are considerably more powerful than other similar gear, but they should choose carefully which items they will need for their build (since they are limited to only one). before buying any of the items Skarven sells, players should analyze the affixes and compare them to their priority stats to make the most out of each purchase.
Skarven sells a lot of special Legendary items that have been added with the Beneath Ancient Skies expansion, and to obtain them, players need to trade Ancient Bones, Primordial Fans, Primordial Scales, and other materials dropped by farming Rift Beasts.
