Final Fantasy 14‘s time on the PlayStation 4 may come to an end sooner than some fans might like. That detail was provided by Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida himself, who discussed Final Fantasy 14‘s future and a number of details regarding upcoming content.
Final Fantasy 14 has largely wrapped up the main story of Dawntrail, its latest expansion, and is moving towards Final Fantasy 14‘s next story arc. Fans are waiting with bated breath to see what Final Fantasy 14 will do next, especially with the reception of Dawntrail being mixed. However, gamers who have been playing on the PS4 may not be able to rely on their console to carry them very far into Final Fantasy 14‘s future.
Final Fantasy 14 is Pushing PS4 Support to the Limit
In an interview with Feed4Gamers, Yoshi-P was asked about the game’s ongoing support of the aging console, pointing to similar games that have dropped the PS4. Yoshi-P side-stepped confirming whether the game would still be playable on the PS4 by the time the game’s next expansion or 8.5 patch launches, but explained that the game is reaching the limit on PS4. Yoshi-P states that Sony has hardware regulations “related to the limit of data,” and that the developers had previously received an increase in the limit from Sony itself. However, Sony has apparently now informed Square Enix that it’s reaching the limit of how far it can push the system.
Yoshi-P confirmed that he and the team want to support as many platforms as they can for as long as possible, but that the hardware will eventually be “at its limits in terms of its technology.” When that time comes, PS4 support will come to an end. However, he also added that prior to that happening, he would personally provide clear reasoning and communicate it to the players directly.
Those in the Final Fantasy 14 community who are still playing on PS4 may want to consider upgrading in the near future. The PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PCs are capable of playing the game, and Yoshi-P previously stated that Square Enix has had “positive discussions” about the possibility of bringing Final Fantasy 14 to the Nintendo Switch 2, so that could become an option. The PS4’s aging hardware also meant that it didn’t receive as many graphical improvements as the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X versions, so those who upgrade may enjoy seeing the world all over again once they switch to a newer console or PC.
