Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has issued a cryptic in-universe message that points toward September 4 as a date of significance for the beloved sci-fi RPG. The post offers no clear details, only a strange call to action, which has incited a flurry of speculation about what CD Projekt Red could be preparing to announce vis-a-vis Cyberpunk 2077.
Launched in late 2020 after nearly a decade of anticipation, Cyberpunk 2077 faced quite a bit of controversy early on due to numerous technical issues, especially on PS4 and Xbox One. Thankfully, CD Projekt Red overturned the narrative surrounding the game with extensive updates and overhauls in subsequent years, which massively improved the technical state of Cyberpunk 2077 on all platforms. Development of Cyberpunk 2077‘s sequel – dubbed Project Orion – simultaneously kicked off too, leaving a diminishing number of CD Projekt Red devs supporting the original game.
September 4 Could Be a Big Day for Cyberpunk 2077 Fans
CD Projekt Red teamed up with partner studio Virtuous to issue quality-of-life updates for Cyberpunk 2077, most recently Update 2.3. Just about a month and a half since then, the Polish studio has now teased something for Cyberpunk 2077 that will be revealed this Thursday. Over on the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account, the tease arrived in the form of an in-universe announcement from President Rosalind Myers, a character players may remember from 2023’s well-received Phantom Liberty DLC. Dated September 4, 2025, the fictional broadcast calls for “brave netrunners” to help the New United States of America (NUSA) defend against a mounting cybersecurity threat.
The message concludes with the instructions to “take our recruitment test” and “serve the N.U.S.A.” However, there was no recruitment test or link attached to the post, leaving it intentionally vague. Cyberpunk 2077 fans also quickly noticed a lore inconsistency: Myers does not canonically become president until 2065, suggesting either a deliberate timeline twist, a simple bit of immersive flavor, or perhaps a hint at something bigger. Some believe this marks the beginning of a new alternate reality game (ARG), while others point to the potentially imminent addition of long-requested features like New Game Plus to Cyberpunk 2077 via a possible Update 2.4.
Some are even positing a possible Hollow Knight: Silksong crossover of some kind, given that the highly-anticipated Team Cherry game is slated to launch on the same day. However, more cautious fan theories suggest smaller-scale announcements like a photo mode contest, a merch drop, or news about the Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners 2 anime. Interestingly, Cyberpunk 2077 associate director Pawel Sasko retweeted the post, which could indicate that what’s being teased here is rather notable. Cyberpunk 2077 will also complete its fifth anniversary in December 2025 – a few months’ time – so this announcement might well relate to that milestone.
