Dying Light: The Beast will pick up the story of the original protagonist, Kyle Crane, following his adventures in the 2015 title. That’s not to say everything is the same, however. Developer Techland has been open about some of the new directions it’s taking for Dying Light: The Beast and how these will evolve the established formula and design.
Dying Light franchise director Tymon Smektała and quest designer Kalina Sobierajska recently spoke with Game Rant about the changes and adjustments made for the third installment. The two discussed Dying Light: The Beast’s approach to gameplay, the new location of Castor Woods, and the overall vision for the upcoming title. They were also sure to mention, though, that The Beast will still retain many of the core elements that make the franchise unique and that players have come to enjoy, including often surprising and off-kilter moments and missions.
Dying Light: The Beast Won’t Skimp on the Strangeness
The next installment will take a few turns from the franchise’s previous inclusions, with one notable example being that Dying Light: The Beast is a more linear story-driven experience compared to Dying Light 2. Kyle has changed a lot thanks to his years in captivity, and the next chapter of his journey will take him to equally fresh frontiers.
When asked about what fans should expect from the new narrative, Sobierajska said that “players shouldn’t expect clear-cut answers about good and evil, heroes and villains.” As she continued,
“In extreme situations, people make choices they never thought they’d make under normal circumstances. I believe it was Aristotle who said that we should be careful while judging someone’s actions without fully understanding external factors and circumstances that led to them.”
That’s obviously at the fore of its narrative, but it’s not all serious. Speaking to some of the side narratives and missions, Smektała highlighted that the team “allowed ourselves to be weird in some of them. Castor Woods is a special place, a beautiful valley cut off from the world, and strange things have been happening there for decades.” He went on to note that, even though Dying Light: The Beast‘s timeline places it long after the initial outbreak, the more remote nature of its setting means that there remain many secrets and quirky characters that players can find and meet during their playthroughs.
As he said,
“Kyle’s story is there, and it’s obviously the star of the show, but I also think that it’s a part of Dying Light’s DNA to deliver some left-field, outside-the-box adventures. Remember Gazi or Tolga and Fatin? The weirdness, the goofiness, the unexpected is still there!”
Along with protagonist Kyle Crane’s new perspective, abilities, and motivations, fans can be assured that Dying Light: The Beast will continue the tradition that the series has maintained since its start: often outright oddball inclusions that are humorous and dark, but always entertaining and engaging.
