- President Curtis spin-off promises deeper exploration of the character and excitement for fans.
Since debuting in 2013, the Rick & Morty series has blossomed into a franchise spanning comic books, tie-in fast food menu items, feature film cameos, and video game promotional materials. Now, it is getting its first full-fledged spin-off series as well.
There is just no way Adult Swim and the powers that be expected Rick & Morty to become a genuine cultural phenomenon when it debuted on December 2, 2013. Why would they have anticipated a mature cartoon based on a Back to the Future parody film to become a bona fide smash hit? That is exactly what happened as Rick & Morty became a full-fledged franchise with tie-in merch, numerous awards, and a passionate fanbase that may or may not be just a little too rambunctious for its own good, depending on who you ask. Having beloved actors like Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke, and Tom Kenny in the recording booth certainly has helped grow such a passionate fanbase, and one of the supporting stars of the show is getting their very own spin-off series after first debuting on the show way back in 2015.

Rick and Morty premiered in 2013 and became a pop-culture phenomenon, but some seasons are arguably better than others. Here’s how they compare.
During the Rick & Morty panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, it was announced that Keith David’s beloved President Andre Curtis is getting his very own spin-off series titled, unsurprisingly, President Curtis. David was even on hand at the panel to help announce the brand new cartoon. “This is a series we would have greenlit even if it didn’t have anything at all to do with Rick and Morty,” said Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen. “President Andre Curtis is just that good of a character. The rest of the world the team has fleshed out is super fun and totally stands on its own. We can’t wait for you to see it.” David will be joined in the voice cast by Encanto‘s Stephanie Beatriz and Community‘s Jim Rash.

More Work For Keith David Is Always A Good Thing
Keith David is just about as beloved a voice actor as we have working in the entertainment industry nowadays. While he first broke through in the 1980s with films like The Thing and Platoon and continues to act on screens both big and small, David has made voice work his bread and butter over the past three decades. In series like Gargoyles, Spawn, and Adventure Time, films like The Princess and the Frog, Coraline, and Princess Mononoke, and video games like Mass Effect, Halo 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, David’s voice has become instantly recognizable to multiple generations.
“President Curtis has always been a blast to play. Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.” – Keith David
Fans of Rick & Morty will assuredly be excited about President Curtis, but those who love the voice work of the irreplaceable Keith David should be pumped as well. David’s memorable president was originally based on the personalities of both Barack Obama and Donald Trump, but has grown into a character all his own. Given that his new series will provide an even deeper look at the sometimes ally, sometimes antagonist to Rick Sanchez, there is a lot to look forward to for Rick & Morty diehards.
